About

Beatrice Joan Caulfield was born on June 1, 1922, in West Orange, New Jersey, and died on June 18, 1991, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, from cancer at the age of 69. She attended Miss Beard's School in Orange, New Jersey, before her family relocated to New York City, where she enrolled at Columbia University and participated in productions staged by the university's drama group. During this period she also worked as a model with the Harry Conover Agency, appearing in numerous national publications and on the cover of Life magazine's May 11, 1942 issue. She was the niece of Genevieve Caulfield, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 for her work with blind children.

Caulfield's Broadway career spanned 1942 to 1987. Her first stage credit was the musical Beat the Band in 1942, which ran for 67 performances. She then took on the role of Corliss Archer in the 1943 comedy Kiss and Tell, a production that ran for 956 performances through 1945. After approximately a year in the role, Caulfield departed to pursue opportunities in Hollywood and was replaced by her sister Betty Caulfield. She also appeared on Broadway in Happy Birthday, Mr. Abbott!

Her stage work attracted the attention of Hollywood producers, and in July 1944 Paramount cast her in the lead role of Miss Susie Slagle's, released in 1946. Though made after that film, Duffy's Tavern was released earlier in 1945 and featured Caulfield in a cameo alongside much of Paramount's talent roster. Her subsequent Paramount credits included Monsieur Beaucaire, Blue Skies, Dear Ruth, Welcome Stranger, and a cameo in Variety Girl, all from 1946 and 1947. She continued with The Unsuspected, The Sainted Sisters, Larceny, and Dear Wife in 1947 and 1948. Caulfield later moved to Columbia Pictures to make the musical The Petty Girl with Robert Cummings in 1950, and appeared in The Lady Says No in 1951, released through United Artists and produced by her then-husband Frank Ross.

In the early 1950s, Caulfield transitioned into television, guest starring on programs including Robert Montgomery Presents, Lux Video Theatre, The Ford Television Theatre, Schlitz Playhouse, and Hollywood Opening Night. She signed a contract with CBS in 1953 and co-starred in the television adaptation of My Favorite Husband during the 1953 and 1954 seasons. She starred in the series Sally during the 1957–1958 season, then went on to guest appearances on Pursuit, General Electric Theater, Hong Kong, Cheyenne, Burke's Law, The High Chaparral, and My Three Sons. Her later screen credits included the feature films Cattle King in 1963, Red Tomahawk and Buckskin in 1967, the pilot for The Magician in 1973, The Daring Dobermans in 1973, The Hatfields and the McCoys in 1975, The Space-Watch Murders in 1975, Pony Express Rider in 1976, and episodes of Baretta and Murder, She Wrote. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she remained active in touring productions, summer stock, and dinner theater.

In 1950, Caulfield married film producer Frank Ross, with whom she had a son, Caulfield Kevin Ross, born in 1959. The couple divorced in 1960. That same year she married dentist Robert Peterson, and their son John Caulfield Peterson was born in 1962. That marriage also ended in divorce, in 1966. Caulfield was a practicing Roman Catholic. A. C. Lyles delivered her eulogy. She holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
