About

Hazel Joan Bryant was an American actress, opera singer, director, and playwright, born on September 8, 1939. Her musical training spanned several prestigious institutions, including the Peabody Preparatory School of Music, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. She later earned a degree in theater administration from the Columbia University School of the Arts.

Bryant's Broadway career included an appearance in Funny Girl in 1965. Beyond her performing work, she founded the Richard Allen Center for Culture and Art in 1969 and remained its executive director until her death.

Bryant died of a heart attack at her Manhattan home on November 7, 1983, at the age of 44. Her death came shortly after she had spoken at the United Nations.
