About
James Joseph Baio was born on March 15, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York. A cousin of actor Scott Baio and Vampire Weekend band member Chris Baio, he is also the uncle of Major League Baseball player Harrison Bader.
Baio began his screen career in 1975 at the age of 13, the same year he appeared on Broadway in All God's Chillun Got Wings. His television work during the late 1970s and early 1980s brought him his most recognized role: Billy Tate on the ABC comedy series Soap, which ran from 1977 to 1981. That period also saw him appear in the 1977 film The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training, in which he played Carmen Ronzonni.
Beyond Soap, Baio accumulated a range of television credits, including guest appearances on The Facts of Life, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Matlock, Trapper John M.D., Matt Houston, Too Close for Comfort, and Family Feud. In 1979, he and actress Susan Richardson took part in the Junior Pyramid special of The $20,000 Pyramid.
His career continued into the 1990s, with his final screen appearance coming in the 1996 film The Mirror Has Two Faces.
