About

Jim Horn, born James Ronald Horn on November 20, 1940, in Los Angeles, is an American saxophonist, woodwind player, and session musician who appeared on Broadway in 1977 in the play Caesar and Cleopatra.

Horn's professional career began in 1959 when he replaced saxophonist Steve Douglas, subsequently spending five years on the road with Duane Eddy as a sax and flute player and contributing to Eddy's recording sessions. That early experience positioned Horn as one of the most sought-after horn session players of the 1970s and 1980s, alongside Bobby Keys and Jim Price.

His studio work spans some of the most recognized recordings of the rock era. Horn played flute and saxophone on the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and contributed flute to the Rolling Stones' Goats Head Soup. He also played flute on Canned Heat's original studio recording of "Going Up the Country," a performance later reproduced in the film Woodstock. Horn worked on solo albums by three members of the Beatles, and his association with George Harrison deepened after he appeared at Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh benefit in 1971.

Beyond rock, Horn maintained a long working relationship with country artist John Denver, touring with him on and off from 1978 to 1993 and performing with him again following Denver's Wildlife Concert in 1995. He also collaborated with Don Williams on at least two songs and toured with Williams for two years.

Horn released several albums under his own name, including Through the Eyes of a Horn on Shelter Records in 1972, Jim's Horns on Shelter Records in 1973, Neon Nights on Warner Bros. Records in 1989, Work It Out in 1990, and Children of the Universe in 2012. In 2007, he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville as a member of the Wrecking Crew. His sister Kathie married session guitarist Mike Deasy in 1961, a fellow contributor to the Wrecking Crew's body of work.
