About
Jim Brochu, born August 16, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American actor, writer, director, and playwright. He studied at Carnegie-Mellon University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Francis College. His stage career began with a production of William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew.
Brochu's Broadway credits include Brigadoon, in which he appeared in 2010. His work spans both Broadway and Off-Broadway stages across several decades, encompassing acting as well as writing and directing.
Among his most recognized projects is Zero Hour, a one-person play he wrote and performed, exploring the life and career of actor and comedian Zero Mostel. The production ran Off-Broadway from 2009 to 2010 and earned Brochu the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance. He revived the play in June and November 2018 for limited engagements at the Theatre at Saint Clement's in New York City and at the Actors' Temple in Midtown Manhattan.
Brochu co-wrote the musical The Big Voice: God or Merman with Steve Schalchlin in 2007 and 2008, a production in which he also starred Off-Broadway. The show received the Ovation Award for Best Musical, presented to Brochu and Schalchlin by Jerry Herman. In 2005, Brochu received a nomination from the Los Angeles Ovation Awards for Best Actor in a Musical for The Big Voice, and won the same recognition from both the Palm Springs Desert Star Awards and the Valley Theatre League ADA Awards.
Beyond the stage, Brochu is the author of Lucy in the Afternoon, an unauthorized biography of Lucille Ball, with whom he had a personal friendship. In connection with that work, he appeared in an episode of MythBusters. His television credits also include Season 1, Episode 4 of The Other Two, titled "Chase Gets the Gays," which originally aired on February 14, 2019.
