About
Jill Susan Eikenberry, born January 21, 1947, in New Haven, Connecticut, is an American actress whose career spans film, television, and stage. She was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, and later in St. Joseph and Kansas City, Missouri. After beginning undergraduate studies in anthropology at Barnard College of Columbia University, she auditioned during her second year and was accepted into the Yale School of Drama.
Eikenberry's early professional theater work brought her to the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., where she appeared alongside Michael Tucker in The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail in 1970 and Moonchildren in 1971. The latter production transferred to Broadway in 1972, marking her introduction to the Broadway stage. She and Tucker married in 1973 and settled in New York City. They have a son, Max, and a stepdaughter, actress Allison Tucker, from Tucker's first marriage.
Throughout the 1970s, theater remained her primary focus. She made her Broadway debut in 1974 in All Over Town, and her Broadway work continued through 1981, encompassing productions including Watch on the Rhine, Summer Brave, Twyla Tharp Dance, and the musical Onward Victoria, in which she starred. Onward Victoria closed on its opening night in 1980. Off-Broadway, she appeared in Uncommon Women and Others, which was subsequently filmed for American public television.
Her screen career began with a minor role in the 1971 television film They've Killed President Lincoln. Early film appearances included Between the Lines, directed by Joan Micklin Silver in 1977, and two 1978 releases: Lina Wertmüller's A Night Full of Rain, in which she and Tucker both had roles, and An Unmarried Woman, starring Jill Clayburgh. Her feature film credits also include Hide in Plain Sight and Arthur, both released in 1980 and 1981 respectively, and The Manhattan Project in 1986.
Television brought Eikenberry her widest recognition. In 1986, producer Steven Bochco, who had previously cast both Eikenberry and Tucker in two episodes of Hill Street Blues, offered them major roles in the NBC drama L.A. Law. Eikenberry played attorney Ann Kelsey on the series from 1986 to 1994, a performance that earned her five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress in a Drama Series. She won the Golden Globe in 1989. During the L.A. Law years, Eikenberry was diagnosed with breast cancer, which was successfully treated over two years. In 1989, she co-produced a documentary for NBC titled Destined to Live, featuring interviews with cancer survivors including Nancy Reagan. She has continued as an activist for breast cancer research and early detection. In 2022, she reprised the role of Ann Kelsey in the ABC revival pilot of L.A. Law.
With the financial success generated by L.A. Law, Eikenberry and Tucker co-produced several television films in which they appeared together, including Assault and Matrimony in 1987, The Secret Life of Archie's Wife in 1990, A Town Torn Apart in 1992, and Gone in a Heartbeat in 1996. Following the series' conclusion, her screen appearances included the 2003 comedy Manna from Heaven, alongside Cloris Leachman and Shirley Jones, as well as guest roles on Numb3rs in 2008, Law and Order in 2009, and Body of Proof in 2011. She played mothers of lead characters in Suburban Girl in 2007, Something Borrowed in 2011, and Young Adult in 2011.
In 2008, Eikenberry and Tucker produced a PBS documentary titled Emile Norman: By His Own Design, about the artist Emile Norman, from whom they had purchased neighboring land in Big Sur, California. In March 2015, she co-starred with Tucker in The M Spot, a play written by Tucker and presented at the New Jersey Repertory Company. Eikenberry received an Obie Award in 1986 for her Off-Broadway performances in Lemon Sky and Life Under Water, and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical in 2011 for the Off-Broadway musical The Kid. She and Tucker reside in New York and Umbria, and have collaborated on writing songs together.
