Born April 30, 1944, in New York City, Jill Clayburgh was the daughter of actress Julia Louise and Albert Henry "Bill" Clayburgh. After attending Sarah Lawrence College, she joined the Charles Street Repertory Theater in Boston, then made her Broadway debut in 1968. In 1979, she married playwright and screenwriter David Rabe; they had two children, Michael and Lily.
Her film credits include "Bridesmaids," "Love & Other Drugs," "Running with Scissors," "Fools Rush In," "Going All the Way," "The Face on the Milk Carton," "Rich in Love," "Whispers in the Dark," "Pretty Hattie's Baby," "Beyond the Ocean," "Shy People," "Hanna K.," "I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can," "Starting Over," "An Unmarried Woman," "Semi-Tough," and "Gable and Lombard." She won Best Actress at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival for "An Unmarried Woman."
On November 9, 2010, Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in her honor.
