About
Jessie Mackaye (November 7, 1879 – June 28, 1967) was an American comic stage actress who worked during the Victorian era. Born into an Episcopalian family in St. Louis, she received her early education at the Convent of the Sacred Heart before pursuing a career in the theater.
Mackaye graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in April 1896, at a ceremony held at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway. That same month, she made her acting debut with the Amateur Comedy Club in a production of Dandy Dick, also staged at the Lyceum Theatre, where she played the role of Sheba at the venue located at Seventh Avenue and 57th Street.
Her Broadway career brought her to the Olympia Theatre in New York in September 1897, where she appeared in The Little Minister, taking on the role of Micah Dow. The production stands as her verified Broadway credit.
Mackaye subsequently pursued work in London, where in July 1899 she joined DeWolf Hopper's production of El Capitan, performing the role of Estrelda. The Era praised her performance, noting her dainty prettiness, unflagging activity, and innocent archness in the part. She reunited with Hopper in January 1900 for The Mystical Miss, also known as The Charlatan, again performed in London.
On July 26, 1900, Mackaye married Robert Frederic Hobbs in New York, and that November she announced her retirement from acting. In her later years she resided in Darby, Pennsylvania. She died of cardiac arrest on June 28, 1967, at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Middletown Township, Delaware County, at the age of 87.
