About

Jessie Eliza Bateman (2 August 1877 – 14 November 1940) was an English stage actress whose professional career spanned more than half a century. Born in 1877, she made her first professional appearance at the age of ten at the Alhambra Theatre, performing in a series of ballets. Her first dramatic role came in 1889 at the Globe Theatre, where she played Cobweb in A Midsummer Night's Dream, followed by an appearance at the Prince of Wales Theatre in The Rose and the King in 1890. In 1891, she took part in Arthur Sullivan's grand opera Ivanhoe at the Royal English Opera House.

Bateman spent five years with F. R. Benson's Shakespearean touring company during the early 1890s, taking on progressively significant roles including Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Celia in As You Like It. In 1894 she married George Augustus Ashfordby-Trenchard, who transitioned from a military career into acting. Returning to London in 1896, she appeared at the Comedy Theatre in The Guinea Stamp and Mr Martin before being engaged by producer George Edwardes for a tour of South Africa, where she performed leading roles in works including J. M. Barrie's comedy The Little Minister, the serio-drama Secret Service, and the romantic drama Under the Red Robe.

Following a brief return to London in 1898, Bateman toured the United States in the title role of Peggy Stubbs and in H. Reeves-Smith's play A Brace of Partridges. She subsequently starred alongside Reeves-Smith at the Royalty Theatre in London, playing Connie in A Little Ray of Sunshine. In 1899, she joined Charles Hawtrey's company at the Avenue Theatre, taking the role of Minnie Templar in A Message from Mars. That role brought her to Broadway in 1901, marking her sole credited appearance on the New York stage. She also toured America in the part and later reprised it at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London. Her husband resumed military service when the Second Boer War began in 1899 and died in South Africa in 1902.

The early years of the twentieth century represented a particularly productive period for Bateman. In 1904, she starred as Fairy Rosebud in W. S. Gilbert's The Fairy's Dilemma at the Garrick Theatre. Around the same time she appeared as Fanny in The Clandestine Marriage, as Nell in Everybody's Secret, as Imogen in The Cabinet Minister, as Acacia Dean in Lucky Miss Dean, and alongside Cyril Maude in Beauty and the Barge. In 1906 she joined Gerald du Maurier at the Comedy Theatre in Raffles, playing Gwendoline Conran in a production that ran for 351 performances. When that run concluded in 1907, she married Wilfred G. Chancellor, with whom she had three children.

Bateman returned to the stage in 1909, appearing as Madame de Tessenari in The Merry Devil at the Playhouse Theatre. The following year she appeared in a revival of The Whip, by Cecil Raleigh and Henry Hamilton, at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, performing the role of Lady Diana Sartorys on horseback. She continued performing on stage for more than two decades after that production and appeared as Mrs. Wayne in the short film Account Rendered in 1932. Her last major stage appearance came in 1933 at the Queen's Theatre in Spendlove Hall. Bateman died on 14 November 1940 at the age of 63.
