About
Jesse Greer (August 26, 1896 – October 3, 1970) was an American composer and book writer born in New York City and based on Broadway. He died in Columbia, Connecticut.
Greer's Broadway career produced several notable credits, including Harry Delmar's Revels, the musical Padlocks of 1927, and Say When. His musical Shady Lady, which featured additional music by Sam H. Stept, reached the stage in 1933. Beyond his work as a book writer, Greer composed music across a range of productions and songs, among them "Just You, Just Me," written for the 1929 musical film Marianne with lyrics by Raymond Klages. His catalog of composed songs also includes "Kitty from Kansas City," "Gonna Meet My Sweetie Now," "Climbing Up the Ladder of Love," "Spellbound," "Flapperette," "Freshie," "What Do I Care," "Sleepy Head," "Once in a Lifetime," and "Baby Blue Eyes."
Greer was an early financial contributor to the Boy Scouts of America and maintained a connection to the June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation in Ashford, Connecticut, visiting the camp regularly until his death. The camp's Dining Hall was named in his honor, and the Camp Staff observed a tradition of singing "The Hills of My Connecticut" upon his arrival.
Together with his wife, Josephine Lauter Greer, he funded the Greer Music Library at Connecticut College through a $50,000 gift made via the Lauter Foundation. The library houses the Jesse Greer Sheet Music Collection, which contains more than 100 songs he composed.
