About
Jerry Schaefer is a Canadian actor whose career spans Broadway, television, film, and comedy performance. He made his Broadway appearance in 1964 in Ben Franklin in Paris.
Schaefer trained and worked at The Second City, where he also served as an instructor in the conservatory program. As a member of the comedy troupe The Chumps, he participated in creating and performing long-running pop culture parodies and a series of improvised one-act plays. The group additionally produced an improvised series for CBC Radio. Schaefer has taught workshops focused on improv and sketch comedy writing, and he performed an improvised show alongside Beat poet Ken Nordine at the Chicago Improv Festival.
On television, Schaefer is perhaps best recognized for his recurring role as Ed Frid on The Red Green Show, an animal control officer who is afraid of all animals. His other television appearances include The Kids in the Hall, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Due South, Dan for Mayor, SketchCom, The Ron James Show, That's So Weird, Comics!, and Howie Do It with Howie Mandel. He served as head writer for the CBC Radio comedy series The Muckraker and wrote and produced satirical current-events comedy for What a Week.
His film work includes appearances alongside Carl Reiner and Bette Midler in That Old Feeling, Bruce McCulloch and Natasha Henstridge in Dog Park, and Angelina Jolie in Pushing Tin. Additional film credits include Tommy Boy, Dick, Duct Tape Forever, Secondary High, Cake, Survival of the Dead, and the miniseries 11.22.63.
