About
Gerald LeRoy Lacy, born March 27, 1936, in Sioux City, Iowa, is an American actor and writer whose career has spanned Broadway, film, television, and audio drama.
Lacy is perhaps most widely recognized for his work on the television serial Dark Shadows, where he portrayed multiple characters including Tony Peterson, Reverend Trask, Reverend Gregory Trask, Mr. Trask, and Lamar Trask. Although he was offered the role of Reverend Trask in the second Dark Shadows film, Night of Dark Shadows, his contractual obligations to the soap opera As the World Turns prevented him from taking on the project due to a demanding production schedule. He later returned to the character of Gregory Trask in two Dark Shadows audio dramas: The Wicked and the Dead in 2009 and Kingdom of the Dead in 2010. In 2013, Lacy reunited with Dark Shadows costars Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott for the feature film Doctor Mabuse, written and directed by Ansel Faraj, in which he played the title role. He reprised that role in the follow-up film Doctor Mabuse: Etiopomar, released in 2014.
His Broadway credit came in 1969 with Play It Again, Sam, Woody Allen's stage production in which Lacy played Humphrey Bogart. He subsequently appeared in the film adaptation of the same work, again portraying Bogart. His connection to several future collaborators predates that production; in 1967, he worked alongside Nancy Barrett and David Ford at the Wayside Theatre, both of whom would later become his costars on Dark Shadows.
Lacy's television work extended well beyond Dark Shadows. His daytime credits include The Secret Storm, As the World Turns, where he played Simon Gilbey, Love of Life, where he appeared as Rick Latimer, and The Young and the Restless, where he played Jonas. In the summer of 1970, he was a regular cast member on the CBS summer replacement series Comedy Tonight, and he later appeared on a similar program, 20th Century Follies. His primetime guest appearances include McCloud, Eight is Enough, The White Shadow, Knots Landing, Hardball, and Saved by the Bell. He also wrote an episode of the comedy series Newhart.
On film, Lacy appeared in House of Dark Shadows, The Money, and Blood Bath during the 1970s, as well as The Big G and Imps. His television film credits include Pleasure Cove, Fighting Back, and Chiller.
Lacy met actress Julia Duffy while both were appearing on Love of Life, and the two married in 1984. The couple appeared together on the CBS series Designing Women, with Lacy playing Barry Binsford, the ex-fiancé of Duffy's character Allison Sugarbaker, and in a 2006 episode of Drake & Josh, in which he played Mr. Hayfer, the husband of Duffy's character Alice. They have a daughter, Kerry, born in 1986, and a son, Daniel, born in August 1989. Daniel died by suicide in April 2019.
In September 2010, an interview with Lacy conducted by writer Rod Labbe, titled "Saints and Sinners," was published in Fangoria magazine. The two collaborated again on a longer interview for Scary Monsters Magazine, published in issue 90 in December 2013 under the title "Right for the Part."
