About
Jerome Thor (January 5, 1915 – August 12, 1993) was an American actor who worked across stage, film, and television over a career spanning several decades. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he built his early professional life in the theater before transitioning to screen work that brought him wider recognition.
Thor made his Broadway debut in 1934 at the 46th Street Theatre in Emmet Lavery's The First Legion, launching a stage career that continued through 1946. His Broadway credits encompassed a range of productions, including Anton Chekhov's The Marriage Proposal, Clifford Odets's Golden Boy, Leonid Andreyev's He Who Gets Slapped, Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov's My Sister Eileen, and William Saroyan's Get Away Old Man. He also appeared in The Doughgirls, Calico Wedding, The French Touch, and Strip for Action during this period.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Thor moved into television, taking guest roles on anthology series including Suspense and Studio One. His most prominent screen role came with the syndicated mystery series Foreign Intrigue, in which he starred as Robert Cannon, a trench coat-wearing detective. The program was filmed in Europe and ran from 1951 through 1955. The trench coat Thor wore throughout the series became sufficiently iconic that it entered the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution. Thor was eventually replaced on the series by James Daly; while producers cited salary disputes as the reason, Thor offered a different account, stating that he had grown exhausted from responsibilities beyond acting, including assisting with direction, rewriting scripts, and handling camera equipment.
Thor later portrayed the recurring character Art Delgado on Hill Street Blues in the early 1980s and appeared in films including 55 Days at Peking, St. Ives, Love and Bullets, 10 to Midnight, Riot in Juvenile Prison, and House of the Black Death. He was married to actress Synda Scott and remained so until his death. Thor died of a heart attack in Westwood, Los Angeles, on August 12, 1993, at the age of 78.
