About

Jeremy Merton Sisto, born October 6, 1974, in Grass Valley, California, is an American actor whose career spans film, television, and stage. His father, Richard "Dick" Sisto, is a jazz musician and educator, and his mother, Reedy Gibbs, is an actress. His older sister, Meadow Sisto, is also an actress, known for playing Caroline in the 1992 film Captain Ron. After his parents divorced, Sisto lived with his mother and sister. He has spoken about how his father's absence affected his own approach to parenting. The family relocated to Chicago when Sisto was seven, where he and his sister appeared in Tennessee Williams's final play, A House Not Meant to Stand, at the Goodman Theatre in 1982. He attended Hayfield Montessori School in Louisville, Kentucky, then Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, and also worked with local theater companies Cherry Street Theater and the Absolute Theater Company. Though accepted to UCLA despite limited academic achievement in high school, he did not enroll, instead pursuing acting full-time.

Sisto made his film debut in the 1991 drama Grand Canyon, which starred Kevin Kline and Steve Martin, a film he had already appeared in while still in high school. Early television work included the films Desperate Choices: To Save My Child (1992) and The Shaggy Dog (1994). His film roles in the mid-to-late 1990s were varied: he played a killer in Hideaway (1995), a wealthy teenager in Clueless (1995), a kidnapper in Suicide Kings (1997), Olympic long-distance runner Frank Shorter in Without Limits (1998), and Jesus Christ in the CBS miniseries Jesus (1999). Additional films from that period include Moonlight and Valentino (1995), White Squall (1996), Bongwater (1997), Some Girl (1998), and Playing by Heart (1998). In 1996, he screen-tested for the role of Jack Dawson in James Cameron's Titanic opposite Kate Winslet, a part that ultimately went to Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1998, he portrayed Frederick W. Seward in the TNT television film The Day Lincoln Was Shot.

From 2001 to 2005, Sisto played Billy Chenowith in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under, earning two Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series alongside his castmates. During the same period, he appeared in Angel Eyes (2001) with Jennifer Lopez, and in 2003 starred in the drama Thirteen, the horror film Wrong Turn, and the romantic comedy The Movie Hero. He also appeared in the series finale of Dawson's Creek that year. On the Los Angeles stage, he took on the role of Shane Mungitt, a bigoted Southerner, in Richard Greenberg's play Take Me Out, earning a nomination for the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Featured Performance in a Play in 2004. That same year, he participated in The 24 Hour Plays 2004, one of his noted stage credits.

Sisto's Broadway career ran from 2006 to 2009. In 2006, he appeared in the Broadway production of Festen at the Music Box Theatre. Also that year, he starred in the short-lived NBC drama Kidnapped and appeared in the crime-thriller Unknown. In 2007, he played Earl Hunterson opposite Keri Russell in the comedy-drama Waitress and was featured in the Maroon 5 music video for "Wake Up Call." In 2008, he joined the cast of NBC's Law & Order as NYPD Detective Cyrus Lupo, replacing the character of Detective Nina Cassady as the partner of Jesse L. Martin's Ed Green. He had previously appeared on the series as a lawyer in the prior season's finale. After Martin departed near the end of season 18, Sisto's character was partnered with Anthony Anderson's Detective Kevin Bernard. Sisto remained with Law & Order through 2010. Also in 2008, he voiced Batman in the direct-to-video film Justice League: The New Frontier and starred in Gardens of the Night. In 2009, he appeared alongside Kristin Chenoweth in the independent drama Into Temptation.

From 2011 to 2014, Sisto starred as George Altman, the divorced father of the lead character, in the ABC sitcom Suburgatory, which premiered September 28, 2011, and ran for three seasons before cancellation. His performance earned him a nomination for the 2013 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. In 2012, he played Sheriff Rowlings in the science-fiction comedy-drama Robot & Frank. The following year, he co-starred alongside James Marsden and Claire Danes in As Cool as I Am. In 2014, Sisto co-wrote the screenplay for the comedy film Break Point with Gene Hong, in which he also starred and served as producer. He subsequently joined the cast of Carlton Cuse's A&E remake of The Returned, which was cancelled after one season, and voiced Talon in the animated film Batman vs. Robin. In 2015, he produced and starred in the British thriller Hangman, which premiered at South by Southwest, and joined the cast of ABC's Wicked City as LAPD Detective Jack Roth, a series cancelled after three episodes. From 2016 to 2018, he starred as Freddy Green in Antoine Fuqua's Audience Network drama series Ice, opposite Cam Gigandet and Donald Sutherland. Since 2018, Sisto has portrayed Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Jubal Valentine in Dick Wolf's CBS drama series FBI. His film credits also include May (2002), Waitress (2007), and the animated feature Frozen II (2019), in which he provided a voice role.
