About
Jeremy Pope is an American actor and singer born on July 9, 1992, in Orlando, Florida. He attended Timber Creek High School and later trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Pope began performing the role of Pharus Jonathan Young in Choir Boy at age nineteen, a character he has described as personally significant given his own experience growing up Black and gay.
Pope made his Broadway debut in 2018 playing Pharus Jonathan Young in the play Choir Boy, a role for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play. That same season, he appeared as Eddie Kendricks in the jukebox musical Ain't Too Proud, earning a second Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. His dual nominations made him the sixth performer in Tony Award history to receive nominations in two separate categories in the same year. His work on Ain't Too Proud also brought him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Musical Theater Album as a principal soloist on the cast recording. In 2019, Pope received a Theatre World Award. He returned to Broadway in 2022, starring as painter Jean-Michel Basquiat in The Collaboration, opposite Paul Bettany, who portrayed Andy Warhol.
Beyond the stage, Pope appeared in the Netflix miniseries Hollywood, created by Ryan Murphy, which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Leading Role in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. In 2021, he joined the cast of Murphy's series Pose in its third and final season, playing Christopher, a boyfriend to the character Blanca. His film work includes a performance in The Inspection, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination in 2023.
Pope is also an independent recording artist whose musical interests trace back to singing in church and performing in school theater productions and talent shows. He released his first independent single, the self-written acoustic pop song "Wait For You," in 2015, accompanied by a YouTube video. He followed that with the R&B single "New Love" in 2018, for which he also produced a music video, and released a third single, "Feel So Good," that same year. In 2019, he appeared as a featured vocalist on "Be Great," a single by actress and singer Laura Dreyfuss recording under the pseudonym Loladre. On May 7, 2020, he released a cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" as his fourth independent single. In addition to his solo work, Pope is a principal soloist on the cast recording for The View UpStairs. He has also covered material by artists including Lady Gaga and Maroon 5, and has been reported to be developing an EP with multiple producers.
