About

Jennifer Gay Bishop was born on 16 December 1933 in Holywell, Flintshire, North Wales, and died on 17 January 2022 at the age of 88. She performed professionally under the stage name Jennifer Toye, a name drawn from her mother's family. Her mother, Eleanor Toye, was a professional singer, and her father, Joseph Richard Bishop, worked as a lawyer. She had a brother named Francis. Among her maternal uncles were Francis and Geoffrey Toye, both established figures in British musical life; Geoffrey had served as musical director of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in the 1920s, and Francis directed the British Institute of Florence, where Toye received her vocal training. She had previously been educated at Bon Sauveur Convent in Anglesey.

Before joining a professional company, Toye performed with amateur organizations in North Wales. In September 1953 she became a member of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. During the 1954–55 season she was assigned the small roles of Ada and Chloe in Princess Ida, and it was in this production that she made her Broadway appearance in 1955. By 1957 her responsibilities within the company had expanded to include the Plaintiff in Trial by Jury, Sacharissa in Princess Ida, and Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard, with the role of Casilda in The Gondoliers added the following season.

In May 1960 Toye was elevated to principal soprano, succeeding Jean Hindmarsh in that position. She took on Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Lady Ella in Patience, and Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard. The season that followed brought additional principal roles: Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Lady Psyche in Princess Ida, and Celia in Iolanthe. During the 1963–64 season she made occasional appearances as Phyllis in Iolanthe and Zorah in Ruddigore. She remained with D'Oyly Carte until 1965, when she told a reporter that the time had come to pursue other experience.

During her years with D'Oyly Carte, Toye participated in two North American tours. On the second of these, in April 1965, she married a flautist. Her concert work during this period ranged from Bach's St John Passion to Gilbert and Sullivan programs performed alongside company colleagues. Her recorded contributions to the D'Oyly Carte discography include the role of Peep-Bo on the 1957 recording of The Mikado, Celia on the 1960 Iolanthe, Casilda on the 1961 Gondoliers, and Lady Ella on the 1961 Patience. She also provided the voice of Zorah in the 1967 Halas and Batchelor animated film of Ruddigore.

After departing D'Oyly Carte, Toye spent nine months performing on a cruise ship and appeared on stage in Lock Up Your Daughters in York. She worked on television with Arthur Askey and the Fol-de-Rols and performed in pantomime, playing the title role in Cinderella and the Empress in Aladdin. In the early 1970s she joined the chorus of Sadler's Wells Opera, later known as English National Opera, where she sang in repertoire spanning composers from Monteverdi to Wagner. She left that company in the mid-1970s to care for her father during his final illness. In 1979 she married Michael Rees, a business executive, and the couple settled in Kingston-upon-Thames, where they ran a bespoke hardwood joinery business for approximately thirty years.
