About

Jennifer Marie Morrison is an American actress and director born on April 12, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois, who grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The oldest of three children, Morrison was raised in a household shaped by education: her father, David, was a music teacher and high-school band director who received the Teacher of the Year designation from the Illinois State Board of Education in 2003. At Prospect High School, where both of her parents worked, Morrison participated in the marching band as an All-State clarinet player, sang in the choir, and was a member of the cheerleading squad, graduating in 1997. She went on to attend Loyola University Chicago, majoring in theatre and minoring in English, and earned her degree in 2000. Before relocating to Los Angeles, she trained at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company.

Morrison's professional career began in childhood, when she appeared in print advertisements for JCPenney and Montgomery Ward and in commercials for Rice Krispies and Mondo. In May 1992, she was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated for Kids alongside basketball player Michael Jordan. Her feature-film debut came at age 14 in the 1994 film Intersection, followed by a role as Samantha in Stir of Echoes (1999). Her first leading film role was in Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000), and subsequent film appearances included Grind (2003), Surviving Christmas (2004), and Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005). In 2006, she starred in and produced the independent film Flourish. That same year, she appeared as Kirce James in the video game Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. In 2009, she appeared in the opening sequence of J. J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot as Winona Kirk, mother of James T. Kirk.

Morrison's most prominent television role came in 2004, when she was cast as immunologist Dr. Allison Cameron in the medical drama House, a role she held through the show's first six seasons, from 2004 to 2009. Her character returned in the 2010 episode "Lockdown" and again in the 2012 series finale, "Everybody Dies." Beginning in 2011, Morrison starred as Emma Swan, a bail-bonds collector revealed to be the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, in ABC's adventure-fantasy series Once Upon a Time, a role she held through 2018. She also portrayed recurring character Zoey Pierson, a love interest of Ted Mosby, on the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother, and played Tess Conlon in the 2011 sports drama Warrior, in which she appeared as the wife of Joel Edgerton's character. In 2019, she joined the cast of This Is Us in a recurring role as Cassidy Sharp, a Marine veteran and alcoholic navigating her return to civilian life, and subsequently guest-starred in seasons five and six.

Morrison made her Broadway debut in 2010, originating the role of Kate Keller, Helen Keller's mother, in the revival of The Miracle Worker. The casting had been announced in December 2009, following the conclusion of her contract on House. In 2017, she appeared off-Broadway in a revival of The End of Longing, playing the role of Stephanie in a run that lasted from May 18 to July 1, 2017.

Behind the camera, Morrison founded her film production company, Apartment 3C Productions, in April 2016, naming it after the apartment she shared with friends during her time at Loyola University Chicago. Under that label, she directed her debut feature film, Sun Dogs, starring Michael Angarano, Melissa Benoist, and Allison Janney, during the summer of 2016. Netflix acquired worldwide streaming rights to the film in December 2017. Morrison is also credited as an associate producer on the first season of Glee, having been among those who identified the project in its early stages and brought it to the attention of writer Ryan Murphy.
