Jennifer Alexander

Jennifer Carrie Alexander (August 15, 1972 – December 2, 2007) was a Canadian ballet dancer and Broadway performer born in Calgary, Alberta. She trained at the Alberta Ballet Company and later at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, where she danced from 1991 to 1993.

Alexander transitioned to Broadway during the early 1990s, appearing in two productions between 1993 and 1994. Her first Broadway credit was The Red Shoes in 1993, followed by Carousel in 1994. Following her Broadway work, she joined the corps de ballet of the American Ballet Theatre in 1994.

Her personal life included two marriages. Her first husband was Andrew Robertson, a Canadian dancer who had performed with the New York City Ballet. On July 28, 2007, she married Julio Bragado-Young, a fellow dancer at the American Ballet Theatre.

Alexander died on December 2, 2007, at the age of 35. She, Bragado-Young, and a third dancer were traveling back to Manhattan after Bragado-Young had performed in The Nutcracker in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. On Route 3 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the group encountered a multiple-vehicle collision. After the three exited their car, both Bragado-Young and Alexander were struck by a vehicle skidding on the icy road. Bragado-Young sustained a broken leg; Alexander died at the scene.

In her memory, the American Ballet Theatre established the Jennifer Alexander Scholarship, awarded to an outstanding corps de ballet dancer.
