About
Jeffry Denman is an American actor, director, choreographer, and author who was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from the University of Buffalo with a degree in Musical Theatre Dance.
Denman made his Broadway debut in the 1995 revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, a production that also yielded a cast recording. He went on to understudy Matthew Broderick in the original Broadway cast of The Producers, an experience he chronicled in his book A Year With The Producers: One Actor's Exhausting (But Worth It) Journey from Cats to Mel Brooks' Mega-Hit, published by Routledge in 2002. He also appeared in the Broadway production of Dream. Prior to his work in The Producers, Denman played Munkustrap in the closing company of Cats.
His work in Irving Berlin's White Christmas spans both its world premiere and its Broadway run. In 2004, he originated the role of Phil Davis opposite Brian d'Arcy James, Anastasia Barzee, and Meredith Patterson at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco. In 2008, he starred in the original Broadway production of the same show opposite Stephen Bogardus and Meredith Patterson. That same year, he co-starred in Ken Ludwig's The Gershwins' An American in Paris at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas.
Away from Broadway, Denman served as assistant choreographer and understudied the role of Noël Coward in the Off-Broadway musical revue If Love Were All in 1999. At New York City Center's Encores! concert series, he played Jenkins in Of Thee I Sing in 2006 and Pat Mason, Jr. in Face the Music in 2007, the latter of which produced a cast recording. In 2010, he choreographed and played Artie in the Off-Broadway premiere of Yank!: a World War II Love Story by Joseph and David Zellnik, earning a 2010 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical and a 2010 Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Best Choreography.
Denman played the role of Michael in John Kander and Greg Pierce's musical Kid Victory, appearing in both the Signature Theatre world premiere in 2015 and the subsequent Off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre production in 2017, which produced a cast recording. His performance earned him a second Drama Desk Award nomination as well as a 2016 Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical.
His regional stage work includes the role of the Baker in a 2009 Wells Fargo Pavilion production of Into the Woods, the Narrator in a 2012 Baltimore Center Stage and Westport Country Playhouse production of the same show, Lee Tannen in the world premiere of I Loved Lucy at the Laguna Playhouse in October 2010, and Bruce in a 2019 Baltimore Center Stage production of Fun Home. His recording credits include the original Broadway cast album of The Producers, the 1995 revival cast recording of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, the Irving Berlin's White Christmas studio cast recording, the Kid Victory Off-Broadway cast recording, a Passion recording from CSC, and the Stage Door Canteen: Broadway Responds to World War II concert cast recording from the 92nd Street Y.
In 2016, Denman founded Denman Theatre & Dance Co. He married Erin Crouch in August 2008; the couple divorced in 2017. In September 2022, he married Sophie Quist in Estes Park, Colorado.
