About
Mary Jeffreys Lewis (born approximately 1852 in London, England; died April 28, 1926, in New York City) was a British-born American actress who performed professionally under the name Jeffreys Lewis. Her stage career spanned more than five decades, extending from her Broadway debut in 1873 through her final appearance in 1925.
Lewis was born on October 25, 1852, to Irish parents of Welsh descent, though some sources cite her birth year as 1855 or later. She studied elocution at the Birkbeck Institute in London and made her first stage appearance at the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1873 she came to America, likely accompanied by her mother May and sisters Catherine and Constance, under the auspices of veteran British actor Thomas C. King. Her Broadway debut took place on September 11, 1873, at the New Lyceum Theatre on 14th Street and 6th Avenue, where she played Esmeralda opposite King's Quasimodo in Notre Dame, a dramatic adaptation of Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.
Her work in that production attracted the attention of John Lester Wallack, and before the end of 1873 she was appearing as Miss Grantham in Samuel Foote's comedy The Liar at Wallack's Theatre on Broome Street and Broadway. During her season with Wallack she appeared in several additional productions, including The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Central Park by John Lester Wallack, The Veteran, The School by T. W. Robertson, The Shaughraun by Dion Boucicault, and Rafael, an adaptation of the French play Les Filles de Marbres by Théodore Barrière. She subsequently spent time with Augustin Daly's company and as a stock player at the Broadway Theatre on Broadway and 30th Street, eventually touring the West with Daly's company and achieving success in California. In the mid-1880s she undertook a tour of Australia and possibly New Zealand lasting one or two seasons.
Following her return to the United States, Lewis built a following in both major cities and smaller venues through a series of notable roles. These included Beatrice in La Belle Russe, an adaptation of a story by May Agnes Fleming; Martha Moulton in Forget-Me-Not by Herman Merivale; the Countess Clothilde in Clothilde, an adaptation of a play by Victorien Sardou; the Countess Zieka in Diplomacy, also by Sardou; and Muriel in The Sporting Duchess by Sir Augustus Harris, Cecil Raleigh, and Henry Hamilton. Her Broadway career, which ran from 1896 to 1925, included starring in The Queen of Chinatown and appearances in Trilby and The Americans in France, among other productions.
As her popularity as a leading lady declined in the late 1880s, Lewis transitioned into character work in supporting roles, a shift that allowed her career to continue well into her later years. Her final stage appearance came in October 1925, when she played Mrs. Schenck in Crane Wilbur's play Easy Terms at New York's National Theater.
Lewis married actor John Adolf Maitland, also known as A. J. Maitland, in San Francisco on August 14, 1878. That marriage ended in divorce nine years later amid charges of infidelity and cruelty. On March 13, 1887, she married actor Harry Mainhall in Oakland, California. Their son, Harry Mainhall Jr., became a Hollywood actor and writer active during the early silent era. Harry Mainhall Sr. died in Los Angeles on November 7, 1902, after a battle with tuberculosis. Lewis died on April 28, 1926, in New York City, survived by her son, who died five years after her. She was interred at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
