Jeffrey Lane is an author, book writer, television scriptwriter, film producer, and actor. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University.

Lane's Broadway work includes writing the book for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which ran on Broadway in 2005. The production earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical, and Lane received individual nominations for the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical, both in 2005. He also wrote the book for the musical adaptation of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which received three Tony Award nominations and multiple Drama Desk Award nominations. Laura Benanti won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her performance in that production.

Lane's television career spans several decades and encompasses writing, producing, and other production roles. His writing credits include Lou Grant, Ryan's Hope, Cagney and Lacey, The Mississippi, Partners in Crime, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, The Murder of Mary Phagan, Mad About You, and Bette, among others. He began his association with Ryan's Hope as a production assistant before later returning as a writer hired by Claire Labine. Lane served as executive producer on Mad About You and Bette, and as co-producer on The American Film Institute Salute to Gregory Peck. He also originated the concept for the television series Ink, though he was ultimately replaced by Diane English before the project moved forward. Additionally, Lane appeared as an actor in the 1987 film Forever Evil.

His work in television has been recognized with five Emmy Awards, three Writers Guild of America Awards, two Peabody Awards, a Golden Globe, and a Christopher Award.
