About
Jeffrey DeMunn is an American actor born on April 25, 1947, in Buffalo, New York, the son of Violet (née Paulus) and James DeMunn, and stepson of actress Betty Lutes DeMunn. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Union College before relocating to the United Kingdom in 1970 to train at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Returning to the United States in 1972, he joined a Royal Shakespeare Company National Tour in productions of King Lear and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and subsequently built his stage credentials through off-Broadway work, including Bent, Modigliani, and a further production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. He also participated in developing plays at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center.
DeMunn's Broadway career spanned from 1976 to 2002 and included starring roles in The Price, Spoils of War, and Sleight of Hand, as well as appearances in Our Town and Hedda Gabler. In 1983, his performance in K2 earned him a Tony Award nomination. His stage work was recognized with a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in 2006. Beyond Broadway, DeMunn continued to work in theater, starring in Death of a Salesman at San Diego's Old Globe Theater in 2012 and A Family For All Occasions at the Bank Street Theatre in 2013.
On screen, DeMunn developed a notable collaborative relationship with director Frank Darabont, appearing in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), The Green Mile (1999), The Majestic (2001), and The Mist (2007). His earlier film credits include Captain Esteridge in The Hitcher (1986) and Sheriff Herb Geller in the 1988 remake of The Blob, which Darabont co-wrote. In 1995, he portrayed Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo in the HBO film Citizen X, a role that brought him a CableACE Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie.
DeMunn's television work has been equally extensive. His guest appearances span series including Kojak, Moonlighting, LA Law, and The West Wing, and he held the recurring role of Norman Rothenberg across Law & Order and Trial by Jury. He appeared in the miniseries Storm of the Century and, continuing his association with Darabont, portrayed Dale Horvath in The Walking Dead from 2010 to 2012. Following his departure from that series, he was cast as Hal Morrison in Darabont's 2013 series Mob City. From 2016 to 2023, DeMunn starred as Charles Rhoades Sr., the wealthy father of Paul Giamatti's character, in the Showtime series Billions.
DeMunn married Ann Sekjaer in 1974; the couple divorced in 1995. He subsequently married Kerry Leah in 2001.
