About
Thomas Jefferson De Angelis was born on November 30, 1859, in San Francisco, California, and died on March 20, 1933. An American stage actor, director, and producer, he built his reputation through comedy and acrobatic clowning, earning recognition in both vaudeville and Broadway productions. His stage career began in Baltimore at the age of ten and extended across several decades, with Broadway appearances spanning from 1887 to 1930.
Among his Broadway credits, De Angelis starred in the revue The Gay White Way and in The Wedding Day. He also appeared in the plays Apron Strings, Diana, and A Royal Family. The last of these, the 1927 Broadway production written by Edna Ferber, was a notable credit near the close of his performing career.
Beyond the stage, De Angelis made sporadic appearances in silent films, primarily in short subjects. In 1931, he co-authored his autobiography, A Vagabond Trouper, with writer Alvin E. Harlow.
