About
Jeff Morrow, born Leslie Irving Morrow on January 13, 1907, in New York City, was an American actor whose career spanned stage, radio, film, and television across more than five decades. He died on December 26, 1993, in Canoga Park, Los Angeles County, California, survived by his wife, Anna Karen Morrow, and a daughter.
Raised in New York City, Morrow studied at Pratt Institute and worked as a commercial artist before pursuing acting. He began performing on stage as early as 1927, billed as Irving Morrow, appearing in productions including Penal Law and Once in a Lifetime, as well as repertory stagings of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. His Broadway career extended from 1930 to 1952 and included productions such as Diamond Lil, The Lady from the Sea, Lace Petticoat, Billy Budd, Three Wishes for Jamie, the Maurice Evans production of Macbeth, and the Katharine Cornell production of Romeo and Juliet.
Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Morrow worked extensively in both stage and radio during the late 1940s. In radio, he won the title role in the Dick Tracy series. On October 17, 1950, he co-starred in the television drama The Trap in an episode titled "The Vanishing Lady."
Morrow transitioned to film relatively late, beginning with the Biblical epic The Robe in 1953. His subsequent film work included Flight to Tangier (1953), Captain Lightfoot (1955), and The First Texan (1956). He became particularly associated with science-fiction films, appearing in This Island Earth (1955), The Creature Walks Among Us (1956), Kronos (1957), and The Giant Claw (1957). His vocal range and ability to shift tone and volume rapidly, a skill developed during his radio career, was a notable characteristic of his screen performances. Later film credits included Harbor Lights (1963), the Italian comedy Il giovane normale (1969), Blood Legacy (1971), and Octaman (1971), directed by Harry Essex.
Television occupied much of Morrow's later career. He made six appearances on the religious anthology series Crossroads, portraying the Reverend M.R. Watkinson in "In God We Trust" and the Reverend Richard C. Smith in the series finale, "Half Mile Down," both in 1957. That same year he was cast as Jim Bradford in "Blood in the Dust" on Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre on CBS, opposite Claudette Colbert. From 1958 to 1959, he starred as Bart McClelland in the syndicated Western series Union Pacific. In 1960, he played Tob in the biblical drama The Story of Ruth and appeared as a geologist in The Twilight Zone episode "Elegy." He was cast three times on Perry Mason, as Franz Lachman in "The Case of the Ancient Romeo" (1962), as Alex Chase in "The Case of the Dodging Domino" (1962), and as Lawton Brent in "The Case of the Festive Felon" (1965). Additional television appearances included The Rifleman, Bonanza, Wagon Train, My Friend Flicka, The Deputy, and Daniel Boone. Following the 1974 cancellation of the sitcom The New Temperatures Rising and the completion of the low-budget film Fugitive Lovers, Morrow largely stepped away from acting. He made a 1975 appearance in Police Story and returned one final time in 1986 for a guest role in The Twilight Zone episode "A Day in Beaumont."
