About

Jeff Lynne is an English musician, singer-songwriter, record producer, and Broadway book writer, born on 30 December 1947 in Erdington, Birmingham, England. He grew up in the nearby Shard End area of Birmingham, where he attended Alderlea Boys' Secondary School. His father purchased his first acoustic guitar for £2, an instrument he was still playing as of 2012. The Beatles were a formative influence on his musical development from an early age.

Lynne began performing in 1963 as a member of a group called the Andicaps, then moved on to the Chads the following year. In 1966, he joined the Nightriders — later known as the Idle Race — as guitarist after responding to an advertisement in the Birmingham Evening Mail, and remained with that band as a founding member and principal songwriter through 1970. During that period, he acquired his first piece of recording equipment, a Bang & Olufsen Beocord 2000 De Luxe stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder, which he credits with teaching him the fundamentals of production. In 1968, while still with the Idle Race, he was invited to observe a recording session at Abbey Road Studios during the making of the Beatles' White Album, where he met the band in person. In 1970, he accepted an offer from Roy Wood to join the Move, contributing substantially to the band's final two albums.

Later in 1970, Lynne, Wood, and drummer Bev Bevan formed Electric Light Orchestra as a project aimed at fusing rock and pop songwriting with classical orchestration. The band's self-titled debut album was released in December 1971, producing the single "10538 Overture." Wood departed in 1972, leaving Lynne as ELO's sole creative leader. From that point forward, he wrote, arranged, and produced virtually all of the band's recorded output. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, ELO placed numerous albums and singles in the top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic. The double album Out of the Blue, largely written during a two-week period in a Swiss chalet, was released in 1977 and became the band's most commercially successful record. Discovery followed in 1979 and reached number one in the UK, where it remained for five weeks. Two ELO albums topped the British charts: Discovery and the science fiction–themed concept album Time, released in 1981. Among ELO's best-known songs are "Evil Woman," "Livin' Thing," "Telephone Line," "Mr. Blue Sky," "Don't Bring Me Down," and "Hold On Tight." Lynne produced all fifteen ELO singles that reached the top 10 in the UK. He disbanded the group in 1986, subsequently reviving it from 2000 to 2001 and again from 2014 to 2025, the latter period operating under the name Jeff Lynne's ELO.

In 1976, working independently of ELO, Lynne recorded covers of the Beatles songs "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "Nowhere Man" for the film All This and World War II. He issued his debut solo single, "Doin' That Crazy Thing," in 1977. He has also released two solo albums: Armchair Theatre in 1990 and Long Wave in 2012.

Lynne's production work outside ELO has encompassed a wide range of artists. In 1988, alongside George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty, he co-founded the supergroup Traveling Wilburys, performing under the pseudonyms Otis Wilbury and Clayton Wilbury. His production credits include the UK or US top 10 albums Cloud Nine by George Harrison (1987), Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison (1989), Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty (1989), Into the Great Wide Open by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (1991), Flaming Pie by Paul McCartney (1997), and Get Up! by Bryan Adams (2015). He also co-produced the Beatles' Anthology reunion singles derived from John Lennon demos: "Free as a Bird" (1995), "Real Love" (1996), and "Now and Then" (2023).

On Broadway, Lynne served as book writer for the musical Xanadu, a credit that drew on his earlier connection to the property — he had contributed five tracks to the soundtrack of the 1980 film musical of the same name, which yielded three top 20 singles for ELO in both the UK and the US.

Among his honors, Lynne received three Ivor Novello Awards, including the award for Outstanding Services to British Music. In 2014, he was recognized with a star on the Birmingham Walk of Stars, and in 2015 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of ELO, and in 2020 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
