About
Jeff Keller is an American musical theatre actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1974 to 1994 and beyond, encompassing original cast memberships, replacement roles, and long-running commitments to major productions. He received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical in 1980.
Keller made his Broadway debut in Candide in 1974. Two years later, he played Perchik in the touring production of Fiddler on the Roof before bringing the role to the Broadway revival later that same year. In 1978, he joined the cast of On the Twentieth Century as a replacement. He originated roles in three productions: The Roast, The 1940's Radio Hour, and Dance a Little Closer.
In 1984, Keller joined the original Broadway cast of Sunday in the Park with George, where he understudied the title role while also taking over several supporting parts during the run. A decade later, he returned to the material to play Billy and Louis in the Broadway Anniversary Concert.
Keller's longest and most multifaceted Broadway association was with The Phantom of the Opera, where he spent 19 years with the company beginning in 1986. He was part of the original cast as an ensemble member and understudy to the Phantom. In 1989, when Cris Groenendaal was promoted to the title role, Keller assumed the role of Monsieur André. In November 1990, he stepped into the Phantom role for approximately one month between the tenures of Steve Barton and Kevin Gray, and in 1994 he again covered the title role for three months, this time between Marcus Lovett and Davis Gaines. In 2001, Keller exchanged roles with George Lee Andrews, taking on the role of Monsieur Firmin in order to keep the production fresh for both performers.
Outside of his stage work, Keller also appeared as Jacob Marley in the annual production of A Christmas Carol at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.
