About

Jeffrey Warren Daniels, born February 19, 1955, in Athens, Georgia, is an American actor whose career spans stage, film, and television. The son of Marjorie J. (née Ferguson) and Robert Lee Daniels, he spent only the first six weeks of his life in Georgia before his family relocated to Chelsea, Michigan, where his father owned the Chelsea Lumber Company and served as mayor. Daniels briefly attended Central Michigan University before participating in a special Bicentennial Repertory program at Eastern Michigan University in the summer of 1976, where director Marshall W. Mason invited him to New York to work at the Circle Repertory Theatre.

Daniels made his Broadway debut in 1977 in Albert Innaurato's Gemini, where he served as assistant stage manager and played various roles. He went on to appear in Lanford Wilson's Fifth of July on Broadway in 1980 alongside William Hurt, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His Broadway credits also include A. R. Gurney's The Golden Age in 1984 with Stockard Channing, Redwood Curtain in 1993, Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage in 2009, David Harrower's Blackbird in 2016, and Aaron Sorkin's To Kill a Mockingbird, which ran from 2018 to 2021. His work in Blackbird and To Kill a Mockingbird earned him Tony Award nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play in 2016 and 2019, respectively, bringing his total Tony nominations to three. Off-Broadway, he received a Drama Desk nomination and an Obie Award for his performance in the Circle Repertory Company production of Johnny Got His Gun, and he also appeared in Lanford Wilson's Lemon Sky with Cynthia Nixon.

Daniels founded the Purple Rose Theatre Company in Chelsea, Michigan, and continues to serve as its executive director. The company's name was inspired by his 1985 film The Purple Rose of Cairo, directed by Woody Allen and co-starring Mia Farrow, for which Daniels received his first Golden Globe Award nomination. His screen debut came in 1981 in Miloš Forman's Ragtime, followed by James L. Brooks's Terms of Endearment in 1983, in which he played Debra Winger's unfaithful husband. Jonathan Demme's Something Wild in 1986 brought him a second Golden Globe nomination, and Mike Nichols's Heartburn that same year featured him alongside Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

Throughout the 1990s, Daniels took on a wide range of film roles. He played Colonel Joshua Chamberlain in Gettysburg in 1993, a role he reprised in the prequel Gods and Generals. In 1994, he appeared in the action blockbuster Speed with Keanu Reeves and co-starred with Jim Carrey in the comedy Dumb and Dumber. He starred in the family film Fly Away Home in 1996 alongside Anna Paquin and appeared in the Disney live-action remake of 101 Dalmatians the same year. Pleasantville in 1998, in which he played diner owner Bill Johnson, was nominated for three Academy Awards. In 2002, he appeared in Stephen Daldry's The Hours alongside Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman. Noah Baumbach's The Squid and the Whale in 2005 earned him a third Golden Globe nomination.

On television, Daniels starred as journalist Will McAvoy in HBO's political drama series The Newsroom from 2012 to 2014, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2013. He won a second Primetime Emmy Award in 2018 for his performance in the Netflix miniseries Godless. He subsequently portrayed real figures including John P. O'Neill in Hulu's The Looming Tower in 2018 and FBI director James Comey in Showtime's The Comey Rule in 2020. Across his career, Daniels has received three Tony nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and nominations for five Golden Globe Awards and five Screen Actors Guild Awards.
