About
Jeannie Carson, born Jean Shufflebottom on 23 May 1928 in Pudsey, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, was a British-born American actress, singer, and dancer whose career spanned stage, film, and television across multiple decades. She died on 1 August 2022 at the age of 94. Carson holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and became a naturalized United States citizen on 24 May 1965.
Carson was born into a show business family and began her career in Britain under the name Jean Carson, later adopting the spelling "Jeannie" to distinguish herself from the American actress Jean Carson. Her early stage work included a principal boy role at the Theatre Royal in Birmingham in 1949, followed by a position as head of the chorus in Noël Coward's Ace of Clubs. In 1951 she joined the musical Latin Quarter at the London Casino and that same year originated a role in Love from Judy in London's West End, a production that ran until 1953 and was later broadcast by the BBC as a film. Her film work during this period included Love in Pawn in 1953 and two pictures for director J. Lee Thompson co-starring Diana Dors, As Long as They're Happy and An Alligator Named Daisy, both released in 1955. In October 1956, John Davis, managing director of Rank, named her among the actors he expected to achieve international stardom.
Producer Max Liebman saw Carson in Love from Judy and signed her to a television contract in the United States. Her American television work began with a six-episode color adaptation of the Broadway musical Best Foot Forward and a version of Heidi. In January 1953 she released her first recording, "Barrels and Barrels of Roses," on the newly formed Philips label. In 1956 she starred in her own CBS series, Hey, Jeannie!, which ran for one season before cancellation in 1957. Six new episodes under a revised format were later broadcast in syndication in 1958 as The Jeannie Carson Show, and reruns aired in primetime during the summer of 1960 under the same title. She also guest-starred on What's My Line?, Jane Wyman Presents the Fireside Theatre, Wagon Train, and General Electric Theatre, and appeared in television productions of Little Women, Berkeley Square, A Kiss for Cinderella, Quillow and the Giant, What Every Woman Knows, and The Rivals. In 1969 she joined the cast of the soap opera Search for Tomorrow, playing Marcy Vincente alongside Oscar-winning actress Anne Revere, who played her mother, and Anthony George, who played her husband.
Carson's Broadway career extended from 1959 to 1970. She took over the role of Maria in The Sound of Music on Broadway in 1962, having joined the production during its run from 1959 to 1963. In 1960 she appeared in a revival of Finian's Rainbow on Broadway, during which she married her second husband, actor Biff McGuire, who was also in the production. The following year the couple toured together in Camelot, with McGuire playing King Arthur and Carson playing Guenevere. Her additional Broadway credits include 110 in the Shade, the play Cactus Flower, and Blood Red Roses, in which she appeared in 1970. Carson and McGuire subsequently spent fifteen years performing at the Seattle Repertory Theatre, often appearing together in productions that included Life with Father, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Inspecting Carol, A Flaw in the Ointment, and The Stoops to Conquer. The couple had two children. Carson's death in 2022 went unreported at the time, with her will completing probate in 2023 in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
