Born Jeanne Murray on January 19, 1923, in New York City, Jean Stapleton was the daughter of opera singer Marie A. Stapleton and Joseph E. Murray. She entered summer stock at 18 and went on to study and perform with the American Actors' Company. Her husband, William Putch, operated the Totem Pole Playhouse in Pennsylvania; together they had two children, Pamela and John.

Film credits include "Damn Yankees!," "Klute," "Up the Down Staircase," "Something Wild," "The Trial," "You've Got Mail," and "Michael." On television, she was best known for "All in the Family," with other credits including "Dr. Kildare," "My Three Sons," "Car 54, Where Are You?," "The Defenders," "Caroline in the City," "Murphy Brown," and "Eleanor: First Lady of the World."

Jean Stapleton earned three Primetime Emmy Awards, all for "All in the Family": Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Comedy Series in 1971 and 1972, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1978.

In 1977, she served as one of 45 International Women's Year commissioners at the National Women's Conference in Houston, helping shape national policy on women's issues. Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in her honor on June 5, 2013.
