About

Jean Smart is an American actress born on September 13, 1951, in Seattle, Washington, where she was raised as the second of four children. Her father, Douglas Alexander Smart, was a teacher and first-generation Scottish-American; her mother was Kathleen Marie Sanders Smart. Smart was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13. She graduated from Ballard High School in Seattle in 1969, where participation in the drama program sparked her interest in acting, and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Washington Professional Actors Training Program.

Following graduation, Smart built her early career in regional theater across the Pacific Northwest, performing in Washington, Alaska, and Oregon, including work with the Seattle Repertory Theater and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. In the mid-1970s she relocated to New York City and began appearing in off-Broadway and professional regional productions. A notable pre-Broadway stage credit came in 1980, when she played Lady Macbeth at the Pittsburgh Public Theater opposite Tom Atkins and Keith Fowler. The following year, she received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the off-Broadway production Last Summer at Bluefish Cove.

Smart made her Broadway debut in February 1981, portraying Marlene Dietrich in the biographical play Piaf, a role she later reprised for a 1984 television adaptation. Her second Broadway credit came nearly two decades later, when she starred in the 2000 revival of the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart comedy The Man Who Came to Dinner, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play. She returned to Broadway in 2025 in the one-woman play Call Me Izzy.

Smart first reached wide television audiences through her starring role as Charlene Frazier Stillfield on the CBS sitcom Designing Women, which she played from the series premiere in 1986 through its fifth season in 1991. In 2000, she joined the NBC comedy Frasier as Lana Gardner, a recurring role set in her hometown of Seattle, for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Between 2000 and 2004 she also appeared on The District as a supervisor of detectives and ex-wife to the police chief. Her role as the mentally unstable First Lady Martha Logan on the Fox series 24 from 2006 to 2007 brought back-to-back Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama. From 2007 to 2009 she played Regina Newley on the ABC sitcom Samantha Who?, winning an Emmy for that performance as well. She subsequently appeared in FX's Legion from 2017 to 2019 and received Emmy nominations for her work in Fargo (2015), Watchmen (2019), and Mare of Easttown (2021). Beginning in 2021, she has starred as Deborah Vance in the HBO Max comedy series Hacks, a role that has added further Emmy Awards to her total. Across her television career, Smart has accumulated seven Primetime Emmy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. From 2002 to 2007 she also provided the voice of Dr. Ann Possible in the Disney Channel animated series Kim Possible.

Smart's film work spans several decades. Her early credits include the thriller Flashpoint (1984). Later films include The Brady Bunch Movie (1995), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Garden State (2004), I Heart Huckabees (2004), Youth in Revolt (2009), The Accountant (2016), A Simple Favor (2018), and Babylon (2022). Her performance in the 1999 drama Guinevere, in which she played the mother of a rebellious student, earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

On the subject of her ancestry, Smart discovered during season 10 of the television program Who Do You Think You Are? that she is a maternal descendant of Dorcas Hoar, one of the last women convicted of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials. Her accolades across stage and screen also include a Grammy Award nomination, making her a multi-platform recognized performer whose career has spanned Broadway, network and cable television, and film for more than four decades.
