About

Jean Louisa Kelly is an American actress born on March 9, 1972, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to J. Joseph Kelly III, a high school English teacher, and Wendy Kelly, a piano teacher. She grew up in Boylston, Massachusetts, before relocating to Maryland during her junior year of high school, where she attended Easton High School in Easton, Maryland.

Kelly's professional acting career began in childhood, when she performed the title role in a production of Annie at the Theater by the Sea in Matunuck, Rhode Island. She reprised that role the following summer at the Candlewood Playhouse in New Fairfield, Connecticut. By the age of 15, she had joined the original Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods, which opened in 1987, playing Snow White and understudying the roles of Rapunzel and Little Red Ridinghood.

Before completing her education, Kelly had already made her film debut as Tia Russell in the 1989 comedy Uncle Buck alongside John Candy. She went on to graduate from Columbia University's Columbia College in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, during which time she also participated in college productions including those staged by the Barnard College Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Following graduation, Kelly became widely recognized through a series of television commercials for MCI long distance, in which she portrayed a telephone operator challenging AT&T. In 1995, she was cast as Rowena Morgan, the muse for the title character, in Mr. Holland's Opus, joining the production after it was already underway and replacing a previously cast actress. That same year, she starred as Luisa in the musical film The Fantasticks alongside Joey McIntyre and Joel Grey, though the film was not released until 2000. Also in 1996, she provided the voice of the title character in the second season of the animated series Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders.

Kelly's stage work extended beyond Broadway to off-Broadway engagements at the York Theatre, where she played the title role in The It Girl, a musical by Paul McKibbins and B. T. McNicholl based on the 1927 film It. She also appeared in the York's Musicals in Mufti series, taking on the role of Lois Lane in It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman.

Her television career expanded through guest appearances on series including Mad About You and Grey's Anatomy, a recurring role as Bernice Pope in the Yahoo production Sin City Saints, and a regular role on the short-lived NBC series Cold Feet. Her most sustained television presence came from 2000 to 2006, when she starred as Kim Warner on the CBS sitcom Yes, Dear.

Kelly's film credits include Origin of the Species, The Day Lincoln Was Shot, Landfall, The Neighbor opposite William Fichtner, Out of the Wild opposite John Diehl, and Call of the Wild opposite Bradley Whitford. In 2021, she appeared as Jane Doe/Serena May in James Wan's Malignant. In 2022, she played Sarah Kazansky, the wife of Val Kilmer's character Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, in Top Gun: Maverick.

In addition to her acting work, Kelly has recorded music, releasing a children's album titled Color of Your Heart in 2013, a five-song EP called Willing in 2015, and an album of standards titled For My Folks in 2017. In 1997, she married attorney James Pitaro, and the couple have two children.
