About
Jean Dixon, born Jean Jacques on July 14, 1893, in Waterbury, Connecticut, was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television. She died on February 12, 1981. Her early education took place at St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, and she later studied dramatics in France under Sarah Bernhardt.
Dixon made her Broadway debut in 1926 in the comedy melodrama Wooden Kimono, launching a stage career that would continue for more than three decades. Her work became associated with a style of brittle comedy, evident in productions such as June Moon, the 1929 play by George S. Kaufman and Ring Lardner, and Once in a Lifetime, the 1930 collaboration between Kaufman and Moss Hart. Her Broadway credits also included The Deep Mrs. Sykes, The Velvet Glove, To Be Continued, and The Square Root of Wonderful. She remained active on stage throughout the 1940s and 1950s, and her final Broadway appearance came in The Gang's All Here during the 1959–60 season.
Her film career began in 1929 with The Lady Lies, and she went on to appear in eleven additional pictures. Among her screen credits was My Man Godfrey, and her final studio film was the 1938 production Holiday, which featured Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and Edward Everett Horton. Even after concluding her film work, Dixon continued performing on stage. She also made television appearances in series and television movies during the 1950s and in 1960.
In January 1936, Dixon eloped with Edward Stevenson Ely; the two were married in Yuma, Arizona.
