About
Jean Leete Carson (February 28, 1923 – November 2, 2005) was an American actress who worked across stage, film, and television over several decades. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, she is perhaps best remembered by television audiences for her recurring role as Daphne, one of the "fun girls," on The Andy Griffith Show.
Carson's theatrical roots began in Charleston, where she performed with the Kanawha Players before pursuing a professional career. Her Broadway debut came in 1948 with George S. Kaufman's Bravo!, a credit that earned her a Theatre World Award in 1949. Her subsequent Broadway appearances included Metropole, The Bird Cage (1950), Men of Distinction, and Anniversary Waltz (1954), with her stage career spanning the years 1948 to 1954.
Her television work began during the medium's early years, with appearances on pioneering series such as Studio One, NBC Presents, and The Ford Theatre Hour. Rod Serling wrote the role of Paula in The Twilight Zone episode "A Most Unusual Camera" specifically for Carson. She continued making guest appearances throughout the 1950s, including a role as Paula in Peter Gunn in 1958 and a part as saloon owner Maggie in a 1958 episode of Sugarfoot. She also held a regular role on The Betty Hutton Show in 1959.
On The Andy Griffith Show, Carson first appeared in 1962 as Naomi in the episode "Convicts at Large," alongside Jane Dulo and Reta Shaw. Her more prominent recurring role was Daphne, a notorious flirt who greeted her objects of affection with the phrase "Hello, doll," appearing opposite Joyce Jameson from 1962 to 1965. In February 1964, she played a nosy neighbor in season seven, episode seventeen of Perry Mason, "The Case of the Bountiful Beauty."
Carson's film credits included The Phenix City Story (1955), I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958), and the 1968 Peter Sellers comedy The Party, in which she received fourth billing. Her final film appearance was in Fun with Dick and Jane (1977).
Carson was married to Leonard Smith, Jr., the assistant manager of the Roxy Theater, and was survived by two sons. She died on November 2, 2005, in Palm Springs, California, from complications of a stroke at the age of 82.
