Jay O. Sanders, born Jay Olcutt Sanders on April 16, 1953, in Austin, Texas, is an American actor and playwright whose career spans film, television, and stage. He was raised in a Quaker household by his father, James Olcutt Sanders, an arts organization executive and violinist, and his mother, Phyllis Rae née Aden. Sanders trained at the acting conservatory at SUNY Purchase.

His stage career began off-Broadway with a Shakespeare in the Park production of Henry V in 1976. Two years later, he originated the role of Bradley in the first New York production of Sam Shepard's Buried Child. Sanders made his Broadway debut in Loose Ends in 1979 and has maintained a presence on Broadway across more than four decades, appearing in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial in 1983, Saint Joan in 1993, Pygmalion in 2007, Girl from the North Country in 2020, and Purlie Victorious in 2023. He has also been a frequent presence at the Public Theatre off-Broadway, where he appeared as George W. Bush in Sir David Hare's Stuff Happens in 2006 and participated in Richard Nelson's Apple Family Plays series, which ran from 2010 through 2013 and included That Hopey Changey Thing, Sweet and Sad, Sorry, and Regular Singing. Sanders has performed in a number of productions at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, in which he played Bottom in 2007, Hamlet in 2008, Twelfth Night as Sir Toby Belch in 2009, and the title role in Titus Andronicus in 2011.

Sanders has received several honors for his stage work. He holds a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, received in 2006. He also received the 2018 Joe A. Callaway Award, presented by the Actors' Equity Foundation for best performance in a professional production of a classic play, for his role in Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. That same performance earned him the Drama Desk Award for Actor in a Play in 2019. In 2024, he received an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Performer in an Off-Broadway Play for his work in Primary Trust. He has also been recognized with a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award.

As a playwright, Sanders wrote Unexplored Interior, a work addressing the Rwandan genocide that debuted in November 2015 at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., a project he had developed over more than a decade.

Sanders made his feature film debut in the 1979 comedy Starting Over. His subsequent film work includes Cross Creek in 1983, Tucker: The Man and His Dream in 1988, Glory in 1989, JFK in 1991, Angels in the Outfield in 1994, Music of the Heart and Tumbleweeds both in 1999, The Day After Tomorrow in 2004, Half Nelson in 2006, and both Cadillac Records and Revolutionary Road in 2008. He also appeared in Green Lantern in 2011 and in the Alex Cross films starring Morgan Freeman.

On television, Sanders played mob lawyer Steven Kordo in the NBC detective series Crime Story from 1986 to 1988 and appeared in two episodes of Roseanne as Norbert "Ziggy" Walsh. He has taken recurring roles in Law and Order: Criminal Intent, The Good Wife, Person of Interest, Blindspot, Sneaky Pete, and True Detective. He served as narrator for the PBS series Wide Angle from 2002 to 2009 and has narrated episodes of Nova and Secrets of the Dead.

Sanders married actress Maryann Plunkett in 1991, having met her on the television series A Man Called Hawk. The couple has a son, Jamie.
