About

Jay Hunter Morris, born July 3, 1963, in Paris, Texas, is an American operatic tenor who gained international recognition for his performances in Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera. He is married to dancer-singer-actress Meg Gillentine, whom he wed in 2008, and the couple have a son, Cooper Jack Morris, born in 2009. The family resides in Roswell, Georgia.

Morris grew up in a household shaped by music: his father, Jack Hunter Morris, served as a Southern Baptist music minister before his death when Morris was thirteen, and his mother, Carolyn, was a church organist. Morris sang in the church choir during his youth and also performed in rock and roll garage bands in high school, graduating from Paris High School in 1981. He went on to study music at Paris Junior College before earning a Bachelor of Music Education from Baylor University in 1986. Following graduation, he relocated to Nashville, where he performed gospel and country music and was involved in ministry. His path shifted toward opera after a friend brought him to a performance of La Traviata in Dallas; he also met tenor Alfredo Kraus during this period, who recommended a voice teacher to him. Morris subsequently earned a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Southern Methodist University and studied vocal performance for two years at the Juilliard School of Music.

His Broadway career began in November 1995, when he performed the role of Anthony Candolino in the original production of Terrence McNally's Master Class, a production that went on to win the Tony Award. The following June, he sang the role of Pinkerton opposite Cheryl Barker in Madama Butterfly for Opera Australia. Morris made his Seattle Opera debut in 1999 in Samuel Barber's Vanessa and his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2007 as Steva in Jenufa, a performance that was broadcast worldwide.

Throughout his career Morris has originated roles in several world premieres. He appeared as Mitch, alternating with originator Anthony Dean Griffey, in the world premiere season of André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire at the San Francisco Opera in 1998. He originated the role of Father Grenville in Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking at the San Francisco Opera in 2000, Captain James Nolan in John Adams's Doctor Atomic at the San Francisco Opera in 2005, Unferth in Elliot Goldenthal and Julie Taymor's Grendel at the Los Angeles Opera in 2006, and Marky in The Fly at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 2008. Morris also sang the role of Captain Ahab in Jake Heggie's Moby-Dick in its Australian premiere at the State Opera of South Australia in August 2011, reprising the role at the San Diego Opera in February 2012 and at the San Francisco Opera in the fall of that year.

Morris came to widespread international attention through his performances as Siegfried in Wagner's Ring Cycle. His involvement with the role began in 2008, when Speight Jenkins invited him to understudy the part for Siegfried and Götterdämmerung at the Seattle Opera for their 2009 season. He subsequently understudied the role at the Los Angeles Opera in 2010 and made his debut as Siegfried at the San Francisco Opera in June 2011. His path to the Metropolitan Opera's new production was unexpected: Ben Heppner had originally been scheduled to sing the role, but withdrew in February 2011, and Gary Lehman, who was then slated to perform, withdrew citing illness just eight days before opening night. Morris, serving as understudy, stepped in as the emergency replacement. Beginning October 27, 2011, he sang the title role in the Met's new production of Siegfried, and the November 5 performance was broadcast live in movie theaters worldwide through the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD cinecast series. Morris also sang Siegfried in the Met's new Götterdämmerung beginning January 27, 2012, with that production cinecast and radio broadcast live around the world on February 11, 2012.

Morris reprised Siegfried at the Met in two consecutive Ring cycles in April and May 2012, including a live Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast of Siegfried on April 21. On May 7, 2012, the documentary film Wagner's Dream, which chronicles the making of the 2011–12 Met Ring cycle and includes Morris's casting and rise to prominence, was cinecast worldwide. PBS broadcast Wagner's Dream and the complete 2011–12 Met Ring cycle on five consecutive nights beginning September 10, 2012, as part of the Great Performances at the Met series. In 2013, Morris shared the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording for the Met's recording of Der Ring des Nibelungen. He performed two additional Ring cycles at the Met in April and May 2013, sang Siegfried at Budapest's Wagner Days Festival in June 2014, and repeated the role at Houston Grand Opera in 2016.

Beyond the Ring Cycle, Morris's Wagnerian repertoire includes Tristan, which he sang in concert performances under Zubin Mehta of Tristan und Isolde in Valencia, Spain in June 2012, and Erik in The Flying Dutchman, which he performed at Glimmerglass in the summer of 2013. His Wagnerian roles also encompass Walther, Lohengrin, Parsifal, and Siegmund. His recordings in principal roles include DVDs and Blu-rays of Doctor Atomic, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Wagner's Dream, and Moby-Dick, as well as a DVD of Madama Butterfly. In 2013, Morris published a humorous autobiography titled Diary of a Redneck Opera Zinger, released by Opera Lively Press in paperback and Amazon Kindle editions.
