About

Jay Philip Goede, born November 2, 1963, in Shakopee, Minnesota, is an American actor whose career has centered on stage work in New York City as well as voice acting. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota before completing a Master of Fine Arts in 1991 at the Yale School of Drama, where his studies included work with acting teacher Earle Gister.

Goede's Broadway career spans from 1993 to 2003 across a range of productions. His earliest Broadway credit was the 1993 original production of Angels in America: Perestroika, followed by two productions in 1995: Sex and Longing, in which he appeared opposite Sigourney Weaver, and The Play's the Thing. He went on to originate a role in A Year with Frog and Toad in 2003. Additional stage work includes the off-Broadway production of The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told in 1998, the 1999 national tour of Cabaret, Miracle Brothers in 2005, and Looped in 2009 alongside Valerie Harper. In 2006, Goede played the title character in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at the Old Globe in San Diego, California.

Beyond the stage, Goede is widely recognized for voicing Mewtwo in the English dub of Pokémon: The First Movie, a credit that appeared in the film's end credits under the name Philip Bartlett. His real name was later associated with the role through the brochure for Pokémon Live!, in which he performed the vocals for Mewtwo's cameo appearance. He has also taken on minor roles in television.

Goede has worked in arts education as a visiting instructor at the University of Minnesota in 2006, the University of Miami in 2009, and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.
