About

Jasper Deeter (July 31, 1893 – May 1972) was an American stage and film actor, stage director, and founder of Hedgerow Theatre in Rose Valley, Pennsylvania. Born in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Deeter built a career that spanned Broadway, regional theatre, and film over several decades.

Deeter's early theatrical work brought him into contact with Eugene O'Neill, beginning with the 1919 production of O'Neill's Exorcism: A Play in One Act. That association led Deeter to join the Provincetown Players, an experimental theatre group based in New York City that staged many of O'Neill's one-act and full-length works. Through his involvement with the company, Deeter appeared in O'Neill's The Emperor Jones and The Hairy Ape. He is credited with persuading O'Neill to cast Charles Sidney Gilpin, a Black actor, in the lead role of Brutus Jones in The Emperor Jones, a production that marked the first time a major Black role in a New York production was performed without the use of blackface. His Broadway appearances between 1920 and 1926 also included Princess Turandot and The World We Live In.

Deeter eventually departed New York after tensions developed within the Provincetown Players over what many original members viewed as an increasing commercialization of the company's productions. He and others felt that prioritizing box office success conflicted with the group's founding commitment to experimental work. Deeter relocated to Rose Valley, Pennsylvania, where he became involved with the Rose Valley Arts and Crafts Community. There he connected with artisans including Wharton Esherick and Elenore Plaisted Abbott, who contributed set construction, scenic artwork, and costume design to his theatrical endeavors. He also drew actors such as Ann Harding, Eva LaGallienne, and Phil Price Jr. to the project. From these collaborations, Deeter established Hedgerow Theatre, one of the first regional repertory theatres in the United States. From its peak years in the late 1920s through the 1950s, Hedgerow presented works by O'Neill, George Bernard Shaw, and Langston Hughes, among others.

In his later years Deeter transitioned into film work, appearing in the 1958 cult film The Blob in the role of the Civic Defense Volunteer and taking a leading part in the 1959 science fiction thriller 4D Man. He remained active in theatre until his death in Media, Pennsylvania, in May 1972 at the age of 78.
