About
Jason Woodward Kalei'ihauola Tam, born June 28, 1982, in Honolulu, Hawaii, is an actor and dancer of mixed Chinese, Hawaiian, and European descent. He completed his secondary education at Punahou School before relocating to New York City, where he trained in musical theatre at CAP 21.
Tam's stage career spans decades and encompasses both Broadway and regional productions. An early credit came in 1993, when he played Gavroche as a replacement in Les Misérables on Broadway. He later performed in regional productions including She Loves Me at The Guthrie Theatre, where he played Arpad Laszlo in 2005, as well as West Side Story, Oklahoma!, Footloose at the Sacramento Music Circus, and King and I at Casa Manana, in which he portrayed Prince Chulalongkorn. His Broadway work includes the 2006 revival of A Chorus Line, where he originated the role of Paul San Marco, a credit that also led to his appearance in Every Little Step, a documentary chronicling the auditions and casting process for that production. The revival cast recording was released in 2006.
On Broadway, Tam played Xander Lee in Lysistrata Jones during its 2011–2012 run. He joined the original cast of If/Then at the Richard Rodgers Theater in 2014, portraying David in the Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey musical for the production's entire run. The original Broadway cast recording reached number 19 on the US charts. He has also appeared in Dear Evan Hansen, listed in the credits as Virtual Community Voices, a role he held from 2016 through 2022.
Tam originated the role of the SQUIP in Joe Iconis' Be More Chill, first in the Off-Broadway run from July through September 2018, and subsequently on Broadway beginning March 10, 2019, with the production closing August 11, 2019. He is a frequent collaborator with Iconis more broadly. Additional stage credits include The Black Suits in 2008, Marry Me A Little in 2012, Merrily We Roll Along in 2015 as Franklin Shepard, KPOP in 2017 as Epic, and Fairycakes: the Play in 2021, in which he played the Prince and Cupid.
On April 1, 2018, Tam appeared in the live televised concert production of Jesus Christ Superstar, broadcast on NBC, portraying the apostle Peter. The soundtrack was released the same year. His discography also includes the Off-Broadway cast recording of Marry Me A Little from 2012 and Broadway's Carols for a Cure from 2014. Outside of the stage, Tam is known for his recurring role as Markko Rivera on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live and as Shoe on the teen drama Beyond the Break.
