About
Jarl Lage Kulle was a Swedish actor and director born on 28 February 1927 in the village of Truedstorp, outside Ekeby, Sweden. The son of merchant Nils Kulle and Mia Bergendahl, Kulle built a career that spanned film, television, and stage, establishing him as one of the foremost Swedish performers of his era. He died on 3 October 1997 in Gregersboda, Sweden, following a diagnosis of bone cancer.
Kulle's stage work was centered significantly at the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Stockholm, where he took on leading roles across both classical and modern repertory. His range extended to television productions and musicals, and his abilities encompassed comedy, romantic drama, and controlled dramatic intensity. He also worked in film on multiple occasions with director Ingmar Bergman.
His screen work brought him considerable recognition in Sweden. At the 2nd Guldbagge Awards in 1965, Kulle received the Best Actor prize for his performance in the drama film Swedish Wedding Night. Nearly two decades later, he earned a second Guldbagge Best Actor award at the 19th Guldbagge Awards in 1983 for his role in Fanny and Alexander.
Kulle brought his talents to Broadway in 1962, appearing in the drama Long Day's Journey Into Night. His career in Sweden had already earned him significant recognition prior to that appearance, including the Thaliapriset theatre award from the Swedish daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet in 1952, making him the second actor ever to receive that honor. In 1954, he was awarded the Gösta Ekman-stipendiet, an award established in 1939 in memory of actor and theatre director Gösta Ekman.
In his personal life, Kulle married Louise Hermelin, born 1939 and the daughter of Baron Carl-Magnus Hermelin and Ann-Marie Sourander, in 1960. The couple divorced in 1968. He married actress Anne Nord in 1976. Kulle was the father of Maria Kulle.
