About
Jared Gertner is an American actor whose career has centered on musical theater, with Broadway appearances between 2005 and 2012. Raised in Toms River, New Jersey in a Conservative Jewish family, Gertner began performing at age six, making his acting debut as a Lost Boy in a production of Peter Pan at a theater run by his aunt and uncle. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York.
Gertner's early professional stage work included the role of William Barfée in the San Francisco and Boston productions of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. His performance earned him an IRNE Award (Independent Reviewers of New England) for Best Actor, after which he joined the New York production as a replacement for Dan Fogler, who had won a Tony Award in the role. Gertner also played Warren in Ordinary Days with the Roundabout Theatre Company in New York, appearing on the production's original cast recording. Additional stage credits include Eubie the Happy Elf in the world premiere of Harry Connick Jr.'s The Happy Elf, Elliot in the world premiere of Band Geeks with Goodspeed Musicals, and an improvisational role in Don't Quit Your Night Job.
Gertner's most prominent stage work came through The Book of Mormon. He initially served as the understudy to Josh Gad in the role of Arnold Cunningham on Broadway, then assumed the role following Gad's departure. He subsequently co-starred with Gavin Creel in the musical's first national tour, which launched in Denver in August 2012, and later joined Creel again for the London West End production, which began previews on February 25, 2013. In August 2024, Gertner was set to portray Ogie in a production of Waitress at the Wells Fargo Pavilion.
Beyond the stage, Gertner has made guest appearances on the television series Ugly Betty, How I Met Your Mother, and The Good Wife. He is openly gay, is married to his husband Jeffrey, and the couple has a son.
