Janie Sell

Janie Sell is an American stage actress born on October 1, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan. Her Broadway career spanned from 1968 to 1979, encompassing a range of musicals and productions that established her as a recognized presence on the New York stage. In addition to Broadway, Sell worked in off-Broadway theater, film, and television.

Sell's most celebrated Broadway credit is Over Here!, for which she received both the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and the Theatre World Award, both in 1974. The production featured the Andrews Sisters — Maxene and Patty, the two surviving members of the trio at the time — and marked the Broadway debuts of John Travolta and Marilu Henner. Her other Broadway appearances include George M!, Irene, a revival of Pal Joey, I Love My Wife, and V.I.P. Night on Broadway, as well as Dames at Sea.

Off Broadway, Sell appeared in 1979 at the Entermedia Theater in God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, a musical comedy adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's novel. The production was adapted and directed by Howard Ashman, with music composed by Alan Menken and lyrics written by Ashman and Dennis Green.

Beyond her stage work during the 1968–1979 Broadway period, Sell continued performing in theater into the mid-1990s. During that time she substituted for Carol Burnett in the Wednesday matinée performances of the comedy Moon Over Buffalo, a production that also starred Philip Bosco.
