About
Janet Fox (June 12, 1912 – April 22, 2002) was an American actress born in Chicago, Illinois, who performed on Broadway across a span of more than three decades, from 1932 to 1967. She was the niece of novelist and playwright Edna Ferber.
After leaving finishing school, Fox trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Art and launched her career with the Westport Country Players. Her first stage role came in 1932, when she played the lead in June Moon, a play written by Ring Lardner and George Kaufman. She went on to build a reputation as a popular character actress, accumulating Broadway credits that included Sherry!, Once for the Asking, the comedy Tall Story, Bravo!, and the comedy Cuckoos on the Hearth.
Among her most notable stage work were two original Broadway productions: she appeared as Bernice Niemeyer in Stage Door and as Tina in Dinner at Eight. In addition to her theater work, Fox was active in radio, and her first romantic lead came through the medium when she appeared in the 1940 broadcast of Manhattan at Midnight.
Her screen and television work included a guest appearance on The Phil Silvers Show, in which she played the role of a librarian in the second-season episode Bilko Acres, which aired on May 7, 1957.
Fox died on April 22, 2002, in Palm Beach, Florida, from natural causes at the age of 89.
