About

Janet Carroll, born Janet Thiese on December 24, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, was an American actress and singer whose work spanned film, television, and stage across more than four decades. She died on May 22, 2012, from brain cancer at her Manhattan home, at the age of 71.

Carroll began her musical training at age 12 under Greta Allum in Chicago, later continuing her vocal studies with Douglas Susu-Mago. That foundation produced a 3½-octave range that allowed her to perform across genres including opera, jazz, gospel, Broadway, and Dixieland. She began acting professionally in the late 1960s, working in local theater productions before becoming a regular performer at Starlight Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, where she appeared across five seasons. During her time in Kansas City and Chicago, she took on significant roles in musicals including Carousel, Guys and Dolls, Gypsy, Hello, Dolly!, Mame, South Pacific, and The Pajama Game. She also sang as a first soprano with the Canterbury Choral Society at Carnegie Hall and other New York City venues.

After relocating to California, Carroll continued her stage career and earned a Drama-Logue Award for her portrayal of Klytemnestra in Ezra Pound's Elektra. Her screen career gained wide recognition through her role as the oblivious mother of Joel, played by Tom Cruise, in the 1983 film Risky Business. Over the following three decades she appeared in more than twenty additional films, among them Secret Admirer (1985), The Killing Time (1987), Memories of Me (1988), Family Business (1989), Talent for the Game (1991), Destiny Turns on the Radio (1995), Forces of Nature (1999), The Omega Code, and Enough (2002).

Her television work included recurring roles on Hill Street Blues, where she appeared in 1983 and 1986 as Peggy LaRue Nelson; The Bronx Zoo in 1987 as Carol Danzig; Murphy Brown from 1990 to 1996 as Doris Dial; Melrose Place from 1993 to 1997 as Marion Shaw; Married... with Children from 1994 to 1997 as Gary, Al Bundy's boss; and Still Standing from 2002 to 2004 as Helen Michaels. She also appeared in television advertisements for brands including Century 21, Diet Coke, Outback Steakhouse, and Holiday Inn.

From 2004 to 2005, Carroll appeared on Broadway in the original musical Little Women, creating the role of Aunt March. The production, based on Louisa May Alcott's 1869 novel, marked her credited Broadway appearance.

Carroll maintained a parallel career as a jazz performer beginning in 1982, appearing at festivals throughout the United States and Canada with her seven-piece ensemble. Her performances spanned venues including the Palmer House in Chicago, the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach, the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, the San Antonio River Walk, and festivals in Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as Monterey, Newport Beach, Santa Catalina Island, and New Orleans. She received a Best Vocalist award at the Redding Jazz Festival. In 2004, she served as the featured performer at the Porrath Foundation for Cancer Patient Advocacy Event, a tribute to film star Rhonda Fleming. In 1992, she contributed as a vocalist to the album This Joint Is Jumpin' Live! – Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band, led by dixieland trombonist and actor Conrad Janis. Her solo recordings include Presenting... Janet Carroll and the Hollywood Jazz Cats (1992), I Can't Give You Anything But Love (2000), I'll Be Seeing You (2000), and Lady Be Good (2010). At the time of her death she was preparing two additional albums, A Tribute to the Great Ladies of Song! and Scorch Your Shorts Torch Songs!

Beyond performing, Carroll served as Artistic Director of The Jazz Series at Simi Valley's Cultural Arts Center, held a vice-presidential position on the executive board of the Society of Singers, and was founder and co-chair of the Victory Ball in Westport, Connecticut. She was ordained and licensed at the Church of Inner Light in West Los Angeles following twelve years of formal religious training, and maintained longstanding membership in the Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists, and Actors' Equity Association. She was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011 and underwent surgery and chemotherapy before her death the following year. She was survived by her son George Brown; her other son, Tom Brown, had predeceased her in 1978.
