A figure within the mid-twentieth-century Abstract Expressionist circle in New York alongside Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, Ms. Lawrence was the subject of Pollock's "No. 7" (1952). Best friends with Tennessee Williams, she may have helped inspire aspects of Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar Named Desire." Under the name June Lawrence, she appeared in the film "Sailor's Holiday" (1944) before pursuing an opera career in Germany during the 1950's.
