About

Jane Harvey, born Phyllis Taff on January 6, 1925, in Jersey City, New Jersey, was an American jazz singer and Broadway performer. Before launching her professional career, she changed her name from Phyllis Taff to Jane Harvey in preparation for her debut at Café Society, a Greenwich Village nightclub operated by Barney Josephson, who had offered her the performing opportunity following an audition.

Harvey built her reputation during the 1940s through recordings made alongside prominent musicians including Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. In 1946, she joined Desi Arnaz's Orchestra, a professional association that continued until 1958, when she stepped away from performing to raise her son, Bob Thiele Jr. During this period she also traveled overseas to entertain troops at military bases as part of Bob Hope's shows. Later, she became a member of Duke Ellington's Orchestra.

Her career extended to the Broadway stage, where she appeared in the 1950 production of Bless You All. In the later years of her life, Harvey performed regularly throughout the Los Angeles area.

Harvey was married to record producer Bob Thiele, with whom she had two children, a son named Robert and a daughter. She later married William King. Harvey died of cancer at her home in Los Angeles on August 15, 2013.
