About
Jane Eleanor Corcoran (August 13, 1881 – August 27, 1961) was an American stage actress whose Broadway career spanned from 1899 to 1934. Born in San Francisco, she was the daughter of actress Estha (or Esta) Williams and Joseph T. Corcoran. Her stepfather, director Arthur Clifford Aiston, also served as her manager. Corcoran began performing as a child and received her formal education at the Institute of Holy Angels in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
Her Broadway debut came in 1899 with A Stranger in a Strange Land, launching a career that would extend across more than three decades. Among her subsequent Broadway appearances were All for a Girl (1908), Mother (1910), A Rich Man's Son (1912), Life (1914), and Drifting (1922). She appeared in The World We Live In and a revival of The Old Lady Shows Her Medals in 1922, followed by Kitty's Kisses in 1926. Her later Broadway credits included Street Scene (1929), Little Orchid Annie (1930), Little Women (1931), A Night of Barrie (1932), A Saturday Night and A Party (both 1933), and While Parents Sleep (1934). Beyond Broadway, Corcoran accumulated additional stage experience in touring productions, with roles in Tennessee's Pardner, Mlle Fifi, At the Old Cross Roads, Pretty Peggy, The Freedom of Suzanne, The Man of the Hour, Divorçons, A Doll's House, and A Gentleman from Mississippi.
Corcoran also worked in film on a limited basis. She appeared in a short silent film adaptation of Mother in 1914 and later took uncredited small parts in Fritz Lang's Fury (1936) and John Cromwell's Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940).
In 1902, Corcoran married Brooklyn businessman and theatrical producer J. Emmett Baxter. She was widowed in 1920 upon Baxter's death. By 1940, she was living in Los Angeles with her mother and a nurse. Corcoran died on August 27, 1961, at the Greystone Nursing Home in Philadelphia at the age of 80 and was buried at Westminster Cemetery.
