About
Jan Clayton (August 26, 1917 – August 28, 1983) was an actress whose career spanned film, Broadway, and television. Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, the only child of two schoolteachers, she began singing at age four. She died of cancer in West Hollywood, California, on August 28, 1983, two days after her sixty-sixth birthday, and her ashes were interred beside her father's grave at Fairview Cemetery in Tularosa.
Clayton began her professional career as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer starlet in the early 1940s, appearing in several films. Among those screen appearances was an unbilled role in the 1948 film The Snake Pit, in which she played a singing inmate. Her Broadway career ran from 1945 to 1972. She originated the role of Julie Jordan in the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein production of Carousel, and her performance is preserved on the original cast recording. She also appeared on the cast recording of the 1946 Broadway revival of Show Boat, Jerome Kern's 1927 musical play. Her additional Broadway credits included Guys and Dolls, Follies, and A Celebration of Richard Rodgers.
It was during the run of Show Boat that Clayton met Robert Lerner, an heir to a women's clothing retail business. The two married and relocated to California, where Lerner enrolled at Loyola Law School. Clayton focused on raising their children during this period, noting in a 1976 People magazine interview that the couple had three children in three years. In 1954, she was among the guest performers in the television tribute The General Foods 25th Anniversary Show, a spectacular honoring Rodgers and Hammerstein that featured surviving stars from the team's Broadway productions between 1943 and 1954. Clayton and John Raitt performed the "If I Loved You" scene from Carousel in full costume and makeup. During this same period she appeared as herself on Dear Phoebe, an NBC sitcom starring Peter Lawford.
Clayton became widely recognized by television audiences beginning in September 1954, when she joined the cast of Lassie, known in syndication reruns as Jeff's Collie. She played Ellen Miller, a war widow raising her young son Jeff, portrayed by Tommy Rettig, on a farm shared with her late husband's father, Gramps, played by George Cleveland. Clayton remained with the series through its first four seasons, departing in December 1957. Her exit coincided with Rettig's departure after he sought release from his contract. Clayton later explained that her home life had suffered significantly during production, citing four children and a husband alongside her demanding work schedule. She made one subsequent appearance on the series, guest-starring in the December 1957 episode "Timmy's Family" in a supporting role alongside Lassie's new cast.
Following her departure from Lassie, Clayton starred in three television pilots between 1959 and 1961, none of which were picked up for series production. These included The Jan Clayton Show, in which she played a college English teacher; The Brown Horse, about a woman working in a San Francisco restaurant to fund her daughter's college education; and a comedy pilot based on Bess Streeter Aldrich's novel Cheers for Miss Bishop. She continued to work in episodic television throughout the early 1960s, appearing in the NBC series Wagon Train in 1961, The Tall Man in 1962, and Gunsmoke in both 1964 and 1965.
In the 1970s, Clayton began receiving treatment for alcoholism. She joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1970 and subsequently worked as a volunteer for the Alcoholism Council of Greater Los Angeles, answering phones every Thursday and eventually serving on the organization's board of directors. In a 1976 People interview, she attributed the worsening of her drinking to the death of her daughter.
