About

Jamie Ross is a Scottish-American actor born on 4 May 1939 in Markinch, Scotland, whose Broadway career spanned from 1971 to 2011.

Ross made his Broadway debut in 1971 playing Major Caldwell in Ari, a musical adaptation of Leon Uris's work that had a brief run. The following year he appeared Off-Broadway in the original 1972 production of Noël Coward's Oh, Coward! at the New Theatre, alongside Roderick Cook and Barbara Cason. The production ran for 294 performances and marked his first significant success with American audiences and critics.

He returned to Broadway in 1981 with Woman of the Year, the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical, where he portrayed Larry Donovan and later Sam Craig. In the role of Sam, Ross played the romantic interest of the lead character Tess, a part performed during his time with the production by Lauren Bacall, Raquel Welch, and Debbie Reynolds in succession. In 1984 he stepped into the role of Georges in Jerry Herman's La Cage aux Folles, replacing Gene Barry in the original Broadway production. The following year he joined 42nd Street, Harry Warren's long-running musical, portraying Julian Marsh, a role that Jerry Orbach had originated earlier in the run.

Ross continued to take on replacement roles in major productions throughout the 1990s. In 1990 he succeeded Jonathan Hadary as Herby in the Broadway revival of Gypsy, performing the role opposite Linda Lavin as Rose. In 1995 he portrayed Josephus Gage in the revival of Jule Styne's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and in the years that followed he played Maurice in the Broadway production of Tim Rice's Beauty and the Beast.

Beyond the stage, Ross accumulated a range of television and film credits. These include appearances in Little Moon of Alban in both 1958 and 1964, the uncredited role of Bruce Harvey in How the West Was Won in 1962, and a 1973 guest role on Emergency! as Jason Channing. He also appeared in The Next Man and The American Woman: Portraits of Courage, both in 1976, as well as The Halloween That Almost Wasn't in 1979. His stage role of Julian Marsh was captured on film in the 1986 recording of 42nd Street.

In December 2014, Ross was invited by the Noël Coward Society to join nonagenarian actress Joan Copeland in laying flowers at the statue of Sir Noël Coward at The Gershwin Theatre in Manhattan, an event held to mark the 115th birthday of the playwright known as "The Master."
