About
Jamey Sheridan, born James Patrick Sheridan on July 12, 1951, in Pasadena, California, is an American actor whose career spans theater, film, and television. He was born into a family of actors and grew up in Pasadena before pursuing a path in the performing arts.
As a young man, Sheridan was an avid football player, but sports injuries prevented him from taking dance classes, redirecting his focus toward acting. He studied the craft at UC Santa Barbara and later spent time at the Old Globe in San Diego. After leaving California, Sheridan traveled through Hawaii and the Mediterranean before settling for a period in Edinburgh, an experience that ultimately prompted him to return to the United States and commit fully to acting. He relocated to New York, where he worked in productions by playwrights including Bernard Shaw and Neil Simon.
Sheridan's Broadway career ran from 1980 to 1994 and included productions such as Ah, Wilderness!, Long Day's Journey Into Night, All My Sons, The Man Who Came to Dinner, and The Shadow. His performance in the revival of Arthur Miller's All My Sons earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play in 1987. His stage work also encompassed Shakespeare, and he later appeared in Campbell Scott's production of Hamlet in 2000.
Sheridan's film career began in the late 1980s with his first on-screen appearance in the Whoopi Goldberg film Jumpin' Jack Flash. Through the 1990s he took on a range of roles, including the 1991 film All I Want for Christmas and the role of Randall Flagg in the 1994 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. Additional film credits include The Ice Storm, Cradle Will Rock, Wild America, Life as a House, Let the Devil Wear Black, The Simian Line, Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story, and Handsome Harry. He played speechwriter Mark Salter in the political film Game Change and Jim Sullivan in the 2015 film Spotlight.
On television, Sheridan starred as lawyer Jack Shannon in Shannon's Deal, which ran for one season beginning in 1990, and later appeared as Dr. John Sutton on Chicago Hope from 1995 to 1996. He played Captain James Deakins on Law & Order: Criminal Intent from 2001 to 2006, a role that included a period during which he wore an eyepatch after developing symptoms of Bell's palsy, a detail written into the series. Deakins was written out of the show at the end of the 2005–2006 season at Sheridan's request, with the character replaced by Captain Danny Ross, played by Eric Bogosian. From 2009 to 2010, Sheridan starred in NBC's Trauma as Dr. Joseph Saviano. In fall 2011, he played Vice President William Walden in the first season of Showtime's Homeland, returning as a regular in the second season. Beginning in fall 2012, Sheridan took on the recurring role of Robert Queen, Oliver Queen's father, on the CW series Arrow, appearing in seasons one, three, five, and seven primarily through flashbacks, a role he continued through 2019. He also appeared alongside Jane Seymour in the Hallmark Channel film Dear Prudence as Detective Eddie Duncan and guest starred on the ABC series Eli Stone on November 6, 2008.
Sheridan is married to actress Colette Kilroy, and the couple have three children. They reside in Los Angeles.
