About

James T. Powers, born James T. McGovern on April 26, 1862, in New York, New York, was an American stage actor, vocalist, lyricist, and composer whose career on Broadway spanned from 1894 to 1935. He began performing on stage in Boston in 1880, and his early career also took him through circuses and vaudeville before he established himself as a prominent figure in live theatre.

During the 1890s, Powers became closely associated with American productions of the Gaiety musicals, a genre originating in London's West End that gained considerable popularity in the United States during that period. He starred in The New Boy and went on to appear in a range of productions including the musicals Two Little Brides and Havana, as well as the play The Rivalry. Although his career was devoted entirely to live theatre, he does carry one film credit: a short film from 1905 titled Digesting a Joke.

On May 19, 1892, Powers married actress Rachel Booth, born in 1862 and living until 1955, in Rochester, New York. The two toured together in several productions throughout their careers. The couple made their home at the Ansonia residential hotel in New York City.

In 1939, Powers published his autobiography, Twinkle Little Star, in New York. He died in New York City on February 10, 1943, at the age of eighty. His career was the subject of a chapter in Lewis C. Strang's 1906 volume Famous Stars of Light Opera, published by L.C. Page & Co.
